A long, long time ago, when the earth was still soft and young... a Kalinago legend has it that two great creatures, a giant snake and a huge centipede, ascended from the ocean and crawled onto the shores of the Kalinago territory. Folklore has it that the great boa constrictor left his footprints in the form of a staircase when he emerged from the ocean... which can still be seen at the landmark L’escalier Tete Chein in Sinecou, the southernmost hamlet of the Kalinago Territory. According to legend, the snake then crawled his way deep into the wooded forest, up the mountains where it is said that he still lives today in a sacred, secluded cave. On discovering this mysterious creature, the Kalinago people believed that the giant snake was a god and worshiped him as Master Tête Chein. Offerings of incense were made to Master Tete Chein, including burning tobacco and storytelling in the form of interpretive dance. In acceptance and as a sign of his gratitude for these gifts, Master Tête Chein would regurgitate a bunch of seeds, which the Kalinago people collected and took back to their village and other parts of the world to plant. Each seed grew a different crop, all imitating Master Tête Chein's manner of movement. His gifts were the crops of the vine: pumpkins, melons, cucumbers, grapes, beans and tomatoes. Today, vine crops (or cucurbits) are included in almost every diet and enjoyed by everyone all over the world. Some of the regurgitated materials are also used in religious ceremonies as charms by the Kalinago people. Not too far away at the hamlet of St. Cyr, the relics of the giant centipede can be found as well. He too had just made his home on the soft earth and was also about to be discovered, but... his story shall be told another time.
