Last fall we planted oats and hairy vetch as a cover crop. Traditionally they're cut and turned into the soil to add organic matter and nitrogen/carbon. We did cut most of it down but because we aren't tilling we just left it on the soil surface (often called #chopanddrop). What didn't get chopped, or grew back, is now producing seed and bringing bees to the garden. The reseed means we won't have to buy cover crop this fall and instead we will have this amazing ever-evolving patch of volunteer plants that contribute to an amazing ecosystem. #permaculture #notill #countryqueers #organicfarming #covercrop

We are 8 weeks into our 22 week market and we have already learned so much. I wanna use this post as a point of reflection, trajectory, and manifestation. The booth we have now started as a desire to sell excess produce and plants from our gardens. I, Aisha, never really intended to grow things specifically for market but rather have an outlet for overflow abundance. For every purchase of our excess we have customers constantly asking for things we don't have and won't have. It has me reconsidering how we plan our gardens. If we want to make this our full-time paying jobs we should probably have what customers are asking for, right? Part of it makes me sad, the buying and selling: capitalism. I dream of bartering and gifting and the natural flow of intentional community and relationships. That being said, this is what I want to do. I want to market garden fruits, vegetables, flowers, and herbs. I want to provide food and medicine for my family, friends, and community. So, I have to reconcile how we do that in our current world. The plight of the U.S. small farmer is real. Mental health and financial struggles are prevalent and we are not an exception. Balancing the art of micro-farming with making a living, taking care of our health, and enjoying what we do is delicate. We choose hard work and dedication everyday though. Sometimes that means we leave the garden early, sometimes we push through the irritability of stalling plants and seed-robbing-birds. While we have so much abundance, this is our first year doing market and there are some things we have learned we need! ✨Produce scale. 🌿Easy to set-up tent and weights. ☀Additional display tables. ✨Branded banner. 🌿Plant signs. ☀Seed planter. ✨Harvest table. 🌿Cool storage. ☀Compost tea brewer and sprayer. We have done amazing with the things we have, this is just a list of things that would make life easier, something to strive for. This is also a placeholder for us to look back on as we grow and change. Ever shifting, I am grateful for the experience even on the hard days. Looking forward to the future and how far we see this thing through. #queerswhofarm #enbieswhofarm #womenwhofarm #gardening

Things that excite farmers: On the hottest day yet, when top soil dries out 30 mins after watering, underneath our leaf and hay mulch, the beds are LUSH. So thrilled that we've created a system that keeps the soil moist and the plants cool. 😎 💦🌿 #farmgoals #smallvictories #buildingsoil #microcosm #smallfarm #asthegardengrows #livingsoil #wherethewormslive

This evening we went out to water one of our gardens and pulled too hard on the hose. Unfortunately the steel pipe and joint had not been buried properly when we repaired it last time. The pvc snapped and the world's smallest Yellowstone geyser erupted. Took us about 3 hours to shut off the main valve, get supplies, repair and set everything. Glue should be dried by morning and ready to rock and roll! The hard truths of gardening. #irrigation #gardening #womenwhofarm #queerswhofarm

I found this sad beauty in the greenhouse. I imagine she got trapped and didn't make it out in time. Thanks for everything, love. 💙 #butterfly #moth #lepidoptera. #gardening #farming

The best part about growing an herb garden is learning about the herbs! And having your own medicine at hand is pretty cool, too. :) #herbstarts #plantbabies #centralpointoregon #saturdaymarket #growagarden #diymedicine

We're not hugeeee fans of celery but we have three hearty plants in their second year. Waiting for flowering then seeding. My only goal is to process into celery salt. 😝 #celery

Synthetic fertilizers are really easy to use. They produce results, for sure, but to us the risks and results aren't worth it. Instead of quick and forced nutrition we make teas and topdress beds with things like manure, alfalfa, fermented plants/weeds, fermented (shell)fish, and extracted herbs; most of which are harvested from our bioregion. This process takes a while, sometimes seasons. It means that new beds are sometimes less productive than mature, older beds. It means that sometimes your peas are limey while the garlic thrives in second season beds. It also means that we're providing critical organic matter and delicious long-term food sources to soil organisms that will feed our plants. It all requires patience, forces us to slow down and be right here. [Photo description: #1 Two bales of dried alfalfa hay are stacked in front of long pea beds with cattle panel trellis, garlic beds are in the background. #2 Aisha fills a 5-gal bucket with the alfalfa hay and water.] #organicgardening #notillgardening #permaculture #queerswhofarm #womenwhofarm #enbieswhofarm #southernoregon
