Mrs. Rosie and the Priest 3/5⭐️ . . A short collection of Italian bawdy tales written written in the 1300's. The short stories were fun and adventurous. That being said, parts of the stories made me visibly cringe. Boccaccio definitely was not afraid of pushing the envelope. My favorite story was the first in the collection, Andreuccio's da Perugia's Neopolitan Adventure. None the stories had deep meanings, but Andreuccio's was the most fun and had a few quotes that stood out. Specifically: "Wrongs of long ago are more easily criticized than put right" and "You've got as much chance of getting a penny back as picking stars from the sky." Definitely an enjoyable collection if you don't take the stories too seriously. . . . . . #bookstagram #booksofinstagram #currentlyreading #instabooks #instabook #booklover #booknerd #literature #literary #bookish #bibliophile #bookphotography #bookcommunity #read #reads #reading #readmore #goodreads #igreads #igbooks #giovanniboccaccio #penguinclassic #classicliterature #littleblackclassics #flowers #coffee #latteart #latte #coffeeshop #bookreview

Little Black Classics Box Set with a little black cat. Reading through all of these is going to be a part of my New Year’s Resolution. I’m so excited to read authors other than Agatha Christie and CS Lewis 😂 . . . . . #bookstagram #booksofinstagram #currentlyreading #instabooks #instabook #booklover #booknerd #literature #literary #bookish #bibliophile #bookphotography #bookcommunity #read #reads #reading #readmore #goodreads #igreads #igbooks #penguin #littleblackclassics #cat #cats #blackcat #catsofinstagram #classics

Does anyone else visit the graves of their favorite authors while traveling, or am I just weird/ morbid? Here’s Seamus Heaney’s grave that @jayzachsby and I visited earlier this year. . . . . #bookstagram #booksofinstagram #currentlyreading #instabooks #instabook #booklover #booknerd #literature #literary #bookish #bibliophile #bookphotography #bookcommunity #read #reads #reading #readmore #goodreads #igreads #igbooks #grave #seamusheaney #ireland #seamusheaneyhomeplace

Taken at the Flood 4/5⭐️ . . I enjoyed this Agatha Christie more than the past few mysteries I read. The story was paced well, nothing was too obvious, and the mystery's resolution was satisfactory. I won't spoil the ending, but be warned, a lot of reviewers/ readers are very upset by it. Maybe just skip the last chapter entirely. . . . . . #bookstagram #booksofinstagram #currentlyreading #instabooks #instabook #booklover #booknerd #literature #literary #bookish #bibliophile #bookphotography #bookcommunity #read #reads #reading #readmore #goodreads #igreads #igbooks #agathachristie #takenattheflood #mystery #murdermystery #bookreview

War and Peace: 5/5 ⭐️ . . Where to begin... First, War and Peace, in my opinion, is vastly better than Anna Karenina. Second, I’m going to be upset over Sonya and Petya’s fates for awhile. Third, the Peaver/ Volokhonsky translation is fantastic. Lastly, War and Peace 100% lives up to its reputation. It’s one of the best novels I’ve ever read. . . . . . #bookstagram #booksofinstagram #currentlyreading #instabooks #instabook #booklover #booknerd #literature #literary #bookish #bibliophile #bookphotography #bookcommunity #read #reads #reading #readmore #goodreads #igreads #igbooks #warandpeace #tolstoy #leotolstoy #annakarenina #coffee #latte #latteart #bookreview

Still reading this beauty - it’s great but daunting. I’m also reading my first advanced review copy from Netgalley 🤓 if anyone has any tips for dealing with ARCs/ Netgalley/ contacting publishers, please let me know. I’ve only been doing unsolicited reviews up to this point and this is all new to me! . . . . . #bookstagram #booksofinstagram #currentlyreading #instabooks #instabook #booklover #booknerd #literature #literary #bookish #bibliophile #bookphotography #bookcommunity #read #reads #reading #readmore #goodreads #igreads #igbooks #warandpeace #tolstoy #leotolstoy #coffee #coffeeshop

The Mysterious Affair at Styles 2/5⭐️ {SPOILERS BELOW} . . I love Agatha Christie, but this book was just ok. My main issue was that the resolution was too convoluted. It turned on two people independently having poisoned Mrs. Inglethorpe and how those poisons interacted. Hastings' narration also left a lot to be desired. Overall, the book wasn't terrible. If you're considering reading an Agatha Christie mystery, I wouldn't start with this one. . . . . . #bookstagram #booksofinstagram #currentlyreading #instabooks #instabook #booklover #booknerd #literature #literary #bookish #bibliophile #bookphotography #bookcommunity #read #reads #reading #readmore #goodreads #igreads #igbooks #agathachristie #themysteriousaffairatstyles #mystery #murdermystery #bookreview

The Lord of the Rings book club hosted by @teawithtolkien makes me so happy, as does being a part of the Bookstagram community. Other than my husband, I’ve never really had friends that love reading and want to talk about books as much as me. Through this lovely corner of the internet, I’ve finally found nerds like myself. Thank you ♥️ . . . . . #bookstagram #booksofinstagram #currentlyreading #instabooks #instabook #booklover #booknerd #literature #literary #bookish #bibliophile #bookphotography #bookcommunity #read #reads #reading #readmore #goodreads #igreads #igbooks #jrrtolkien #tolkien #lotr #lordoftherings #thehobbit #tomiddleearthandbackagain #teawithtolkien #middleearth #bookclub

The Hollow 3/5⭐️ . . Another enjoyable mystery from Agatha Christie. Not her best, but also not her worst. This mystery almost seemed cheesy at times, but Christie wrote those parts in an intentional, winking-at-the-reader way. Overall, I liked it. . . . . . #bookstagram #booksofinstagram #currentlyreading #instabooks #instabook #booklover #booknerd #literature #literary #bookish #bibliophile #bookphotography #bookcommunity #read #reads #reading #readmore #goodreads #igreads #igbooks #agathachristie #thehollow #mystery #murdermystery #bookreview

The Lost Tools of Learning by Dorothy Sayers 5/5⭐️ . . A very short read that proposes a classical education system. In short: the purpose of classical education, at least as she describes it, was to teach people to learn, as opposed to the modern notion of teaching people a smattering of disconnected subjects. As someone who finds our current education system generally incompetent, I love her proposals. I highly recommend reading it. . . . . . #bookstagram #booksofinstagram #currentlyreading #instabooks #instabook #booklover #booknerd #literature #literary #bookish #bibliophile #bookphotography #bookcommunity #read #reads #reading #readmore #goodreads #igreads #igbooks #dorothysayers #thelosttoolsoflearning #coffee #bookreview #coffeeshop

In Our Time by Ernest Hemingway 4/5⭐️ . . Hemingway has a reputation of extreme masculinity, and the half-page vignettes between the short stories live up to that reputation. The violent vignettes speak of war and bull fighting. The short stories themselves, however, are surprisingly vulnerable. The two that struck me the most were moment in My Old Man when the son first hears someone insult his father and feels sick over it and Soldier’s Home when a soldier returns from war and struggles to get his life back together or even talk to a girl. Despite the short format and his minimalist style, Hemingway created deeply human characters in these stories that we can probably all relate to. . . . . . #bookstagram #booksofinstagram #currentlyreading #instabooks #instabook #booklover #booknerd #literature #literary #bookish #bibliophile #bookphotography #bookcommunity #read #reads #reading #readmore #goodreads #igreads #igbooks #ernesthemingway #inourtime #hemingway #lostgeneration #bookreview #starbucks #coffee

Bullies by Ben Shapiro: 3/5⭐️ . . I'm not going to lie, I like Ben Shapiro. He's logical, conservative, and anti-Trump, and after the midterms I was wistfully thinking that in 2020 he'd be old enough to run for President instead of Trump. So I bought this book...in Kindle format so I could read it privately without being judged (I didn’t plan on reviewing it for the same reason). Ben Shapiro does a great job at explaining how it has become a routine political tactic to bully others into silence, i.e., accusing someone of racism for favoring certain economic policies, misogyny because they don't support the same health insurance scheme, or even claiming that everyone that disagrees with you is stupid, etc... The book was a bit dated, but honestly, I think the bullying has gotten worse since he's written it. In addition to name calling, I’ve recently seen outright calls for murder and/or terrorism by leftists recently. It's genuinely terrifying. There's no easy solution to this bullying though. I've tried confrontation, both aggressively and nicely, and that doesn't work, but neither does hiding and being scared to even post a review of a book. . . Clarifications: not all liberals bully and some conservatives do too. I'm not even claiming that I've been perfect at this in the past, there are conversations where I said mean things that haunt me. I only focused on leftists here because it's the focus of the book and what I've personally experienced. By bullying, I primarily mean name calling and/or calls for violence because someone holds a different opinion.
