Part of me suspects this is the chicken that is crowing but it looks like a girl to me... thoughts? . . . Tag a friend who would like this Please follow me: -@Chickenkelsey Via: -@portlandchickens

Hey friends! Please forgive me for the long summer hiatus, but I just really needed a break from social media with everything else going on in my life. I didn’t want to make any announcements, overly heavy posts or anything, because I wasn’t sure how long I would need to recenter myself. But now that summer is starting to ease up, I have more time and energy to do what I love. Thank you so much to those who reached out while I was away, I hope everyone is still doing well! All 20 birds are still here, just wait till you see how much the younger crew has grown over the last few weeks! . . . The case of the crowing hen?? So I’m sleeping cozy in my bed as the sun comes up and all of a sudden 👀.... a rooster crow. I think to myself nope, it can’t be me... I only have hens. Then again, cockadoodledo... so I spring out of bed and open my window. Could it be coming from me? Sure enough it was coming from my coop. No fricken way it could be coming from me...I couldn’t believe it. I had recently gotten three bantams from @serama.mama but we swear they are hens. We inspected their feathering and can’t come to any other conclusion than one of my hens has started crowing. @serama.mama said some of her hens do that too... does anyone else have crowing hens? . . So here I am recording my coop waiting to catch it on camera. (I haven’t yet, they don’t seem to do it if the camera is on!) Maybe I’ll be able to see who the culprit is and unfortunately I might have to get rid of them.... don’t want any troubles with the neighbors as I’m not allowed to have roosters for this very reason. Was gibt es schöneres, als nach getaner Arbeit noch ein bisschen Zeit für die Natur zu haben. Die schottischen Hochlandrinder auf der Höttinger Alm sind immer einen Besuch wert! 🏔🐂 🐂 Great pic 😮 Please follow me: -@Chickenkelsey Via: -@happy.huhn

“Making a garden is not a gentle hobby… It is a grand passion. It seizes a person whole, and once it has done so he will have to accept that his life is going to be radically changed. There are seasons when he will hesitate to travel and if he does travel, his mind will be distracted by the thousand and one children he has left behind, children who are always in peril of one sort or another. However sober he may have been before, he will soon become an inveterate gambler who cuts his losses and begins again; he may think he intends to pare down on spending energy and money but that is an illusion, and he soon learns that a garden is an ever-expanding venture. Whatever he has considered to be his profession has become an avocation. The vacation is his garden.” -May Sarton, Plant Dreaming Deep . . . . . . . . . . . . . Tilda, our broody turkey hen, hatched 3 turkey poults a few weeks ago. We lost one, but have two beautiful cream colored poults. I’m hoping I get one girl, because they’re such a unique color considering the color of the parents 😍 Incredible! Please follow me: -@Chickenkelsey Via: -@oodles.of.coodles

A bird’s eye view of some slo-mo licking action. I think that this behaviour is Dolly’s version of a toddler’s security blanket. When she was a baby she didn’t have any love, security or comfort, so I guess we can make allowances for her now. - Excellent! Please follow me: -@Chickenkelsey Via: -@nicky.cullum

Red Update: She “leaked” some liquid from her evacuation site for about 24 hours, but it finally stopped. She is eating (and pooping) like a normal chicken again, which is a good sign! Hopefully she will put on a bit of healthy weight. She seems to like the chick feed, which is higher in protein, so I’m letting her eat it up. She also prefers her food wet, so I make a paste of chicken feed about the consistency of cooked oats. She’s been walking and talking more than ever. She’s looking good, but it’s early, so I’m exercising cautious optimism. Philomena came inside during the hottest hours of the day and they got along. Red seems to follow me from room to room now. I’m not sure what she wants, maybe treats, but I’m keeping her on a strict balanced diet for now. I ordered a better scale so I can more accurately weigh her every day. I’ve become efficient at administering oral meds. I was thinking of doing a video with tips? xoxoxo Who else wants this? ✔ Please follow me: -@Chickenkelsey Via: -@chelschickens

Change of plans!!!!! We named our Pebbles, seeking alliteration with Philomena and Penny, but it hasn’t been quite a fit for this girl. We’ve decided to call her Sydney, after our wonderful trip to Australia. 🇦🇺 We miss you, Sydney! And @1abercrombielanecafe!!! Wow! Please follow me: -@Chickenkelsey Via: -@chelschickens

Berries are in season here in Oregon so our little family spent the morning picking some at a local farm. Between time spent with my sweet family and the jam we are now making, it’s turning out to be a pretty perfect Saturday over here. . . . Great! 😀 Please follow me: -@Chickenkelsey Via: -@portlandchickens
