The Comtesse d’Haussonville and I both feel dubious regarding the merits of The Frick (see story for les détails)
Such a treat today to finally visit Judy Chicago’s “The Dinner Party”. This iconic work incorporates an intricate ceremonial table, set for 39 key female figures (real and imagined) throughout history, and hundreds of others who are honored by name on the floor. Though I’ve studied this installation in art history classes before, it was even more impactful and sublime in person. I love visual art but hate how nearly all of art history is defined by the (white) male gaze, putting women into sharply delineated boxes as celebrated virgins or society dolls of portraiture or mythological temptresses deserving of violent ends. This exhibit honors multifaceted women throughout the centuries who embraced power, strength, and/or sexuality, and weren’t afraid to effect change.
