'Windows', ink and watercolour pencil on paper / . Windows in to the soul and windows out to the universe. It's incredible how dependent humans are on our vision. Scientists and medics like to think they're clever and that. / 😉 . Dr Richard Asher was an eminent British endocrinologist (hormones) and haematologist (blood). He's a fascinating person as he made an impact in the medical community beyond his narrow discipline. Asher described and named 'Munchausen syndrome', and the famous 'seven sins of medicine' in the reputable journal The Lancet. / . In case you were wondering what the seven sins are: 1. Obscurity 2. Cruelty 3. Bad manners 4. Over-specialisation 5. Love of the rare 6. Common stupidity 7. Sloth // . . #DaleVulpesVulpes #Art #MedicalArt #IndependentArt #Medicine #MedicalScience #Ink #Monochrome #BlackAndWhite #SciArt #Science #quote #RichardAsher #doctor #quote #haematologist #haematology #haems #blood #histopathology #histology #sevensins #sevensinsofmedicine #Munchausensyndrome

'CML', ink, watercolour pencil, gold flakes on paper, red frame / . . Chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) is a type of cancer that affects the blood and bone marrow. It's diagnosed by the detection of increased counts of of basophils and eosinophils (types of white blood cell) in the peripheral blood, as well as the Philadelphia (Ph1) chromosome in bone marrow cells. / . Welcome to all my new followers! 🙌💕🌍 / . This is me. I'm a scientist by day and an artist by night. I like silk shirts, cats, and autumn. I own a money plant named Chubbs the III and I speak ein bisschen Deutsch. Feel free to chat to me about my work or anything else that comes to mind. / . ALSO, for a proper insight, go check out my art website blog. The posts are designed to be short enough for our millennial brains to stay interested. I'M BACK! // I'vw been concentrating on my physical and mental health and now I'm back stronger than ever. I've got lots of exciting work coming up to share with you all. Starting with... COLOUR! Except from my new blog post (Link in bio) 'Colour pop: Dale Vulpes Vulpes moves from monochrome' . "Recently, I’ve been dabbling in the world of colour. For the moment, exclusively experimenting with  ink and pencil, in keeping with my earlier thoughts. In deliberate consideration I am only exploring within the boundaries of three specific colours, red, blue, and green. These are the primary colours of visible light (in the science world, in the art world the primary colours are considered red, blue and yellow). This is to hone my understanding and use of each colour one at a time and to give myself some structure to this new phase, using each colour as stimuli for works specifically constructed to elaborate on that particular colour theme. Pictured here is the very first work produced for my red phase. Blood clot and fibrin.// . . #DaleVulpesVulpes #Art #MedicalArt #IndependentArt #Medicine #MedicalScience #Ink #Monochrome #BlackAndWhite #SciArt #Science

'Stromal networking: Cellular connections in the germinal centre' - acrylic, ink, silver and gold flakes on paper - 56cm x 72cm - available // . . ‘Stromal networking’ was commissioned at part of the Cambridge Pint of Science 2018. Inspired by the 2017 Immunology paper of the same name, co-authored by Dr Alice Denton and Dr Michelle Linterman the artwork seeks to give context to the intricate and complex relationships of mesenchymal stromal cells and immune cells involved in protective immunity, by viewing the process holistically at the lymph node level. Immunology is difficult to visualise, I wanted to make that easier for scientists and non-scientists alike. Some see an alien, some see a fruit, I promise you that is a lymph node. / . . .Chemokine gradients created by stromal cells are highlighted in silver and gold, demonstrating high expression of CCL19/21 and CXCL13 in the medulla T cell zone and B cell follicles respectively. Each immune cell population is highlighted in a distinct colour, Red: stromal cells [follicular dendritic cells (FDCs)], Blue: T cells, Green: Proliferating B cells. Note that these tend to be associated with specific areas of the germinal centre; the aptly named light zone, or dark zone./ . .By taking a step back to view these individually detailed processes as a whole, it is possible to appreciate the daedalian beauty behind the mechanics of launching an immune response. Whilst also providing an anchor point for the uninitiated to discover these intriguing cells responsible for honing the body’s response to infection.// @pintofscience . . . #DaleVulpesVulpes #Art #MedicalArt #IndependentArt #Medicine #MedicalScience #Ink #Monochrome #BlackAndWhite #SciArt #Science #pintofscience #immunity #immunology #lymphnode #stromalnetworking #stromalcells #creativereactions #exhibition #germinalcentre #Bcells

Null hypothesis generation. // . .Bertrand Russel was a British philosopher, logician, essayist and social critic best known for his work in mathematical logic and analytic philosophy, he also received the Nobel Prize for literature. Born into a family of privilege his life was incredibly diverse and he contributed significantly to many disciplines, influencing entire generations of thinkers. He was also a bit (a lot) of a rebel which I kinda (really) like. I'd love to live a life as impactful to society and true to self as Bertrand. // 🇬🇧💜 . . #DaleVulpesVulpes #Art #MedicalArt #IndependentArt #Medicine #MedicalScience #Ink #Monochrome #BlackAndWhite #SciArt #Science #philosophy #thinking #problemsolving #bertrandrussel

'Chromosome' - Ink on paper - 18cm x 23cm - Available / . . .Usually I give a short summary of the associated science, giving an snippet of interesting history or development or current use and thoughts in the science world. But where to even begin with genetics?! It's phenomenonal that some of my colleagues remember a time before the human genome project when they actually had to stain and read for each nucleotide in a sequence of DNA. Technology has moved quickly and our understanding of genetics and epigenetics has exploded, arguably being one of the most important and catalytic discoveries of the last century, knowledge permeating from the laboratory world through to the people on the streets. / . .Ok so most people have a really basic understanding of what genetics are and might recognise what a chromosome is. Let me give you some info nuggets to knowledge-drop into your next geek conversation.... A chromosome is condensed down DNA to stop it from being a tangled mess in cells. The characteristic X shape is only visible during metaphase of cell replication. Chromosomal recombination in meiosis means the swapping of genetic material between different arms of chromosomes during sexual reproduction, this is what gives genetic diversity and how you inherit traits form your parents. Another fun fact about DNA when it's not in the X shaped chromosome form, when you see grainy pictures of a cell nucleus (where the DNA is stored in human cells) the lighter area is called euchromatin, which is DNA that's actively expressing genes in that cell. The darker area is called heterochromatin, which is the rest of the DNA condensed down, not expressing any genes. (you don't want all of your genes expressing every possible protein in every cell! We're more specialised than that) / . . .Here's a pretty good entry level paper summarising the history of reading DNA for my non scientist compadres if you're interested. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4727787/ 👍💜 // . . . #DaleVulpesVulpes #Art #MedicalArt #IndependentArt #Medicine #MedicalScience #Ink #Monochrome #BlackAndWhite #SciArt #Science #chromosome #genetics #genome #exon #DNA

Paracelsus, born Theophrastus von Hohenheim, was a Swiss physician, alchemist, and astrologer of the German Renaissance. He was a pioneer in several aspects of the medical revolution of the Renaissance, emphasising the value of observation in combination with received wisdom. He is credited as the "father of toxicology". Making the connecting between dose and poison. / . . .Take home message: We must understand before we guide. / . . .Understand a situation before we give advice. Understand the basic science before translating to the complexity of humans. Understand the medical unmet needs before we market.
