A New Model For Community Engagement _
Too often in the branding process people are left behind. Research is an afterthought, timings are too tight or the work’s already been done by a research agency. As a result, designers miss out on hearing first hand from the very people who will be the ones using or experiencing what they design. _ In our recent work in Tasmania we’ve put the people, the local West Coast community, front and centre at every step of the process. Art At the Edge of The World _
The Perth International Arts Festival is the longest-running international arts festival in Australia, and Western Australia’s premier cultural event. But in recent years the festival suffer from the category-wide 'McDonalds-isation' trend. Worldwide, festivals run the risk of becoming alike: often, festival programming is very similar from festival to festival, relying on the latest hit shows doing the festival rounds. The festival’s relevance, audience numbers, and earnings had begun to decline significantly. They urgently needed a bold, new way to bring the festival to market – that would dramatically reset audience expectations. _ We started by taking inspiration from the place itself. Perth’s sunsets are legendary (as it’s the last place in Australia that the sun touches), giving it a completely different ambiance to anywhere else – which helped us realise that the festival needed to invite people to see art in a different light. That meant highlighting the colour and light in Western Australia after the sun goes down (and before the curtain goes up), celebrating the flora that thrive in the incredibly biodiverse region, and helping people navigate art in a laid-back, down-to-earth way. _ The festival program is a major driver of ticket sales, so we helped to ensure the language used in it was clear and evoked the specific, unique experiences they'd enjoy at the festival. To do this, we developed a tone of voice that was modelled on the idea of a Western Australian tour guide – someone who was laid back, straight-up, and easy to understand. This gave audiences a clear idea of the experience they'd have, helping them to navigate art (and Western Australia), in a way that was true to the place and people of Western Australia. _ The new brand launched in November 2017, and was immediately successful — smashing expectations by doubling ticket sales against the same time last year.
