Rajasthan - Rambagh Palace. Jaipur. Maharani Gayatri Devi, 23, photographed by Cecil Beaton, 1942. Married to the handsome Maharaja of Jaipur, Ayesha lived at Rambagh with cosmopolitan style, grace and allure. Chic and well-informed, she was regal, lovely, and witty. As a student, I interviewed her for a profile in Australian Vogue. I met her whenever I returned Jaipur. We would walk in the palace garden with her sister Menaka, with peacocks dashing and squawking among the marigolds. One afternoon at 4pm I drove with her in her air conditioned silver 1939 Daimler to The Gem Palace to visit jeweler Munnu Kasliwal and her great friend Sudhir Kasliwal . her favorite stop. The diamond-sparkling shop, dazzling and glamorous, was like her second home. I would also see her in London, and we’d walk to her favorite John Sandoe bookstore from her nearby Chelsea residence. She loved biographies. When Taj turned her palace into a hotel, I’d stay there, and late morning, walk through the hidden garden gate to take tea with her at her modern residence, Lily Pool. The last time I saw her there, she had returned from puja at Moti Doongri temple, and doors and windows were open to the garden and pale grey doves flew in and out. We sipped tea and caught up. The phone rang. It was a dear friend calling from London about a package she had sent to him from Jaipur that had not arrived. “You’ll love it,” she told him. “What’s that you say? No, Dickie dear, it’s not diamonds.” She had a profound influence on Jaipur, founded schools for girls, started a village school I visited, founded many charities, and worked to preserve historic buildings in Jaipur. She died in 2009, aged 90. The beloved Rajmata’s influence lives on. Rambagh is perfectly preserved. Gayatri Devi, Always admired. India - The temple is 600 years old and it is widely believed that feeding the rats at this temple and getting touched by them would bring good fortune. It is also believed that these rats would reincarnate as holy men especially the white rats are considered auspicious. The temple, with silver gates and overhead mesh to protect the rodents from birds, is carved out of stone and marble. #Bikaner #PadharoMhareDesh #rajasthandiaries #rajasthantourism #rajputana #bikanerdiaries #bikanercityblog #bikanerwala #rajasthanclicks #photography #photooftheday #photosofindia #temple #hindu #historical
