I JUST NOTICED THE INSCRIPTION ON MY TRUSTY MINI-MACHETE
I’m under no illusion that when Ahmir and Hub came up from #Philadelphia to play with me in the studio that they even knew who I was.
No, they came up to work with the guy who produced every #SteelyDan record.
We didn’t have a drummer or bass player so when I asked the producer I was working with-Gary Katz-who was the best rhythm section he knew?, he said Ahmir and Hub from #TheRoots. Most of us know Ahmir as QuestLove, but back then we called him by his real name.
So he made a phone call and it happened and I totally fan-girled and they signed my cassette of what is still one of the greatest hip hop records of all time.
I went through life four times, she said to me, as if I didn’t already know.
I stopped and smiled and acted surprised for if
she knew that my ignorance was a lie, She would not teach me.
And what she taught to me was nothing that I
didn’t already know.
And why it meant so much to me was how she let her feelings flow.
And so she taught me.
Tordis Angell, my paternal Grandmother. Born in Grimstaad, Norway, she met her husband, who was a Sea Captain, when his ship needed emergency work in her hometown. He had to wait for the ship to be fixed and they met and fell in love. They married and immigrated to NY. My Pop joined the merchant marines and was at sea most of the time. They had 3 kids including my Dad, whom she basically raised alone. My Grandfather was Captain Trygve Angell. I was given the name Tordis as my middle name. There are some pics where we look identical. We’re both Cancers. As you can see she is a bad ass. #tbt
14 years gone
Every November I think of him and listen to his music. He was one of the most intense people I ever met, who internalized deep pain. What he gave us was a transference of that darkness and light into soul crushing blues. Blues that he paid for dearly. (Edit)- I feel like I didn’t say enough positive things about Chris: He was funny. He was honest. He had a graciousness about him. And you couldn’t compare him to any other guitar player. At least I can’t. He found this sweet spot and took it to crazy levels. He belongs in a God category. 🙏🏽🌟 Photos by me, in NYC, circa 2000, playing with @daniellanois for a party somewhere downtown.
