“If you see a blow, go slow!” The scars on this humpback whale are from a boat that definitely did not slow down. It looks like the propeller hit the whale at least 8 times. Humpbacks have made a huge comeback since the whaling industry almost drove them to extinction. Now they face threats of ship strikes and entanglement. - - - #whale #humpbackwhale #turningthetide #naturelovers #mothernature #bc #britishcolumbia #ourplanetdaily #conservation #gratitude #explorecanada #explorebc #natgeo #natgeoyourshot #yourshotphotographer #wildernessculture #intothewild #gooutside #getoutthere #planetearth #pacificnorthwest #travelblog #rainforest #wilderness #wild #ocean #discover #north #wildlifeplanet #wildlifephotography

David Attenborough once explained an encounter with a group of Gorillas as “emotionally exhausting”, and that’s how I feel every time I encounter Orcas. It’s so hard to separate from a pod once you’ve encountered them, it’s like the more you try to figure them out, the more mysterious they get. - - - #orca #killerwhale #whale #turningthetide #natgeo #natgeoyourshot #yourshotphotographer #bc #britishcolumbia #naturelovers #nature_shooters #gratitude #gooutside #getoutthere #explorebc #explorecanada #conservation #mothernature #rainforest #pacificnorthwest #planetearth #ourplanetdaily #wildernessculture #intothewild #wild #wilderness #travelblog #ocean #earth #bethechange

No matter how deep into the wild you go, you will always find evidence of humans. This giant red cedar would have been about 5-6 hundred years old before it was cut down in just a few hours (by hand). To put that in perspective, when this tree was just a sapling, Henry VIII was king of England and beheading his wives. It is incredible to think what a tree of this stature has been through, and how much life it has given. - - - #explorebc #ourplanetdaily #explorecanada #turningthetide #ocean #pacificnorthwest #cedar #tree #rainforest #gooutside #getoutthere #natgeo #natgeoyourshot #yourshotphotographer #planetearth #conservation #logging #britishcolumbia #bc #wildernessculture #intothewild #wild #king #gratitude #travelblog #naturelovers #nature #mothernature #earth #passionpassport

A withered fluke of a humpback whale shows evidence of a rope or fishing line being wrapped around it, probably a long time ago. With the recent boom in humpback population, there has been more entanglement incidents. The last time I found a whale entangled (from an anchored fish farm), it took Department of Fisheries and Oceans 10 hours to respond, plus another 4 hours of rescue. It is illegal and extremely dangerous to perform an entanglement rescue without the adequate training. And yet, there is no training available. This was the first Grizzly Bear that I saw this year, it was one of the calmest and most delicate encounters. It was spring and he had not long risen from hibernation, which is why he looks so skinny. Bears don’t lose any muscle mass during the winter, just body fat. So when they wake up, they are strong, lean and ready to tackle another season. Each year is proving to be more difficult for the bears to put on enough weight to hibernate effectively. Salmon depletion and weather changes are two major factors. Climate change is real, it’s happening right now and it’s effecting the animal kingdom as we speak. - - - #animalkingdom #climatechange #conservation #grizzlybear #bears #pacificnorthwest #salmon #bethechange #bc #britishcolumbia #natgeo #natgeoyourshot #yourshotphotographer #gooutside #getoutthere #naturelovers #intothewild #wildernessculture #ourplanetdaily #mothernature #travelblog #wildlifephotography #wildlifeplanet #planetearth #gratitude #wild #rainforest #ocean #explorebc #explorecanada

This sea otter very quickly became famous in the community. He was always found floating in one of the passes, tumbling around and constantly massaging his cheeks, belly and feet. It didn’t take long for him to acquire the name “Itchy”. I’m not usually one to name wild animals, but Itchy earned it. He wasn’t shy at all as he posed for us just a few feet from the boat. - - - #seaotter #otter #turningthetide #animalkingdom #explorebc #explorecanada #mothernature #naturelovers #natgeo #natgeoyourshot #yourshotphotographer #intothewild #gooutside #getoutthere #britishcolumbia #bc #wildernessculture #wildlifeplanet #planetearth #gratitude #pacificnorthwest #rainforest #travelblog #wild #discover #ohcanada #conservation #oceano #earth #wilderness

I’ve just heard news via @dolphin_project_rus that there is Hope the 100 orcas and beluga whales being imprisoned for money and eventually entertainment in Russia. Evidence has come out that the capture process may not have been legal. Isn’t it amazing that in this day and age we still have to question the legality of the torturing of wild animals. The whales are to be sold to China to live a new life in a tank. From freedom in the ocean, to a salt water tank. Stripped from their family for money and laughs. Hope isn’t good enough, this has to stop now. - - 📷 Photo of a wild and free resident orca in the Great Bear Rainforest. - @dolphin_project @sealegacy @lonelywhale @oceana @cetaceanawareness #russia #pacificbay #wildernessculture #ourplanetdaily #stop #freedom #whales #orca #beluga #china #gratitude #family #turningthetide #travelblog #conservation #bethechange #natgeo #natgeoyourshot #yourshotphotographer #gooutside #getoutthere #wilderness #discover #planetearth #naturelovers #mothernature #ocean #intothewild #ecofriendly #activism

Each day we step foot on the dock is another day that we have arrived safely at home. The hand in this image belongs to ‘Chief’ Charlie Mason, and has seen more than 60 years of boat driving. That is 60 years of exploring the rainforest, tackling storms, watching the ecosystems and how they’ve changed over the years. How lucky I am to learn from such wisdom. - - - #veteran #wisdom #captain #chief #experience

When you live in a city or a town, or any high populated areas, you won’t notice humanity’s impacts to earth’s important ecosystems. Spend a few years in the wilder places and very soon you’ll notice the changes. They are devastating and scary. When you hear of a habitat that is ‘thriving’, know that it is simply recovering (from us). Because there is no wild place on earth that is not feeling the impacts of humanity. When an animal looks directly into the camera, I want the image to feel natural, as if the animal is not alert or worried and my presence is non-existent. In this process I achieve two things: An image that gives the viewer a sense of connection to the subject, and the comfort of knowing I’ve caused little to no distress to the animal. - - - #wildlifephotography #ethical #lion #lioness #planetearth #wildlifeplanet #intothewild #wildernessculture #ourplanetdaily #wild #africa #safari #natgeo #natgeoyourshot #yourshotphotographer #gratitude #botswana #gooutside #getoutthere #animalkingdom #travelblog #conservation #wilderness #discover #naturelovers #mothernature #nature #sleepy #explore #worldtravel

I am so excited to announce that I will be taking on an internship with @sea_legacy, a fast growing conservation organization dedicated to creating healthy and abundant oceans. It is my dream to be an impactful advocate for the suffering habitats on this planet, and to have a voice that is heard. This is a huge step in making that dream come true. To work under the wings of @paulnicklen and @cristinamittermeier is a dream come true in itself. I’m looking forward to becoming a part SeaLegacy’s team and taking on an affective role that will contribute to their mission, a mission that I wholeheartedly believe in. - - - #turningthetide #conservation #ocean #gratitude #wildernessculture #ourplanetdaily #sealegacy #planetearth #travelblog #explorebc #explorecanada #natgeo #natgeoyourshot #yourshotphotographer #naturelovers #mothernature #greatbearrainforest #bc #britishcolumbia #wildlifeplanet #dreamcometrue #whales #bears #discover #getoutthere #gooutside #wild #intothewild #pacificnorthwest #internship

I’m finally launching my photography website. It’s simple, but gives you a taste of who I am and what I’m about. Photography would be worth nothing to me if I felt it wasn’t making a positive difference and telling important stories about our world. That’s why 10% of selected prints purchased will be donated to my two favourite conservation organizations @pacificwild and @sea_legacy. Thank you so much for your support. Link to my website is in my bio. - - - #conservation #ourplanetdaily #explorebc #explorecanada #travelblog #britishcolumbia #bc #natgeo #naturelovers #mothernature #yourshotphotographer #natgeoyourshot #gooutside #getoutthere #wildernessculture #intothewild #wildlifeplanet #pacificnorthwest #nature #gratitude #discover #planetearth #rainforest #spiritbear #bears #turningthetide #wilderness #wild #ecofriendly #ocean

It was amazing to hear my brothers birthday was being celebrated around the world. Thank you to all those friends and family that gave him a toast and partied the way he would have wanted it. Those who knew Tom would not be able to recall a dull moment in spending time with him, there was always something to jump over, something to climb, somewhere to party, someone in need - he could do all those things with such incredible energy because in the end he could just nap on the sidewalk... It’s a very strange feeling living on this planet without you, Tom. I’m never not thinking of you. Here’s to ya 🍺
