A week or so ago, I was fortunate enough to get together with @theannahoone and @buck_lukley for their @livefromthepalace video series.
The palace is a cozy little trailer parked in SE Portland, that plays host to various local and touring musicians.
The tune I decided to play is called “Tell Yourself,” which I wrote some months back. Generally I don’t swear in my songs, as I find cuss words unnecessary or a bit over-expressive in musical storytelling; but this one just came out and it felt good. So - it became one I wanted to share.
It is about disregarding the preconceived notions of others. Friends, strangers, friends-of-friends - whatever. It is so damn easy to dig yourself into a hole of anxiety or self doubt, worrying about how other perceive you or what they might have heard.
No one really knows your whole story, and that’s ok. As soon as you’re able to recognize that and let it go, I think you allow yourself space to go about your life. To be able to walk into a room without immediately becoming worried how your character is judged. It is a difficult hurdle to jump, but recognizing it and trying to make that mental shift is a solid step forward. I hope it resonates with some of you. Thanks for watching/listening.
