Rickson Gracie has been noted as one of the most technical and influential fighters in the beginning of mixed martial arts as it formed in tournament-like combat. Gracie was an early innovator of Brazilian jiu-jitsu as he was the powerful representation of his family, the Gracies, who began the movement of ground-fighting which is called Brazilian jiu-jitsu. In the early mixed martial arts days when different styles clashed against each other in order to determine who and what style was the most effective, Gracie was ahead of his time with a balanced mind, body, and spirit. Rickson was extremely deep of a human being with a samurai-like mindset of how he fought and how he approached his fights. Everything mattered, and every decision is connected to one's performance. He involved deep breathing, yoga, and full body control into his training regiment, which was not just physical but psychological as well. He kept his mind clean and sharp weeks before his tournaments and bouts. He used imagery to be truly mindful and deeply in tune with his technique and performance by visualizing everything that could happen. The noises, smell, the music, and the visual cues. Gracie describes his method using imagery as, “It’s the most beautiful movie, and every time I relive it I create images and nuances that I want to experience.” (Djokovic, 2017, p.4). Awareness provides the athlete to gain control during their performance. The ability to tap into control can completely turn a game or match around. It begins with being responsible and taking accountability; then refocusing or recognizing what to do next through one’s preparation. Be focused, present, and under control.
