・・・I am outraged ! This is not acceptable!! 😡😡
Some 3.4 million chickens and turkeys and at least 5,500 pigs have already been killed in North Carolina in the past few days by flooding and damage from Hurricane Florence.
In the lead-up to, and now in the wake of, the storm, many photos have been circulating showing pigs trapped in/on top of flooded barns, swimming in floodwaters, or floating dead. With collective outrage, people are asking: Why are these animals left to drown?
North Carolina is the second largest pig farming state in the U.S., home to some 9 million pigs, many of whom are concentrated in towns that were right in Hurricane Florence’s path. In this same region, millions of farmed animals drowned in the floods caused by Hurricanes Floyd and Matthew.
While some farmers moved animals to higher ground or slaughtered them early in response to this week’s storm, millions of farmed animals were once again left behind to drown. To discuss the question of why, Free from Harm writer Ashley Capps, based in North Carolina, told Jane Velez-Mitchell that there is no logical way to say that animals don’t deserve to be left to drown in floods while maintaining that those same animals deserve to be sent to slaughterhouses.
You can read more on Ashley’s thoughts at her article, No Matter How ‘Humane,’ Eating Animals Means Treating Them Like Trash (link in our bio): “When you maintain that an animal’s dearest wish for continued existence, and its entire potential lifetime of meaningful experiences, are worth less than the non-essential taste of bacon, hamburger, or cheese; that animals should actually be killed for these fleeting and replaceable pleasures, despite an abundance of healthy plant-based alternatives; then you are saying in effect that these animals are trash.” #vegan #vegansofig #HurricaneFlorence #hurricane #flooding #climatechange #climateaction #climatejustice #environmentaljustice #animaljustice #animalrights #animalliberation #pigs #pigfarming #piglovers #pigsofinstagram #pork #bacon #baconlovers #pigsofig #friendsnotfood
