Located in the southwestern corner of Kastellet: the windmill was constructed in 1847 and replaced another mill from 1718. The original mill was a post mill while the current mill is of the traditional Dutch style. Since Copenhagen was a fortified city, it needed a constant supply of flour and so many windmills such as this one were constructed to satisfy a stable demand in the eventuality of a siege. Krøyers Plads, Copenhagen: designed by #vilhelmlauritzenarchitects and #cobearchitects . A mixed-use development, it draws inspiration from the historic warehouses that accompany it on the waterfront whilst still appearing bold and highly contemporary in form: being both empathetic to its context and respectful to the surrounding neighbourhood of Christianshavn. #copenhagen #copenhagenarchitecture #contemporaryarchitecture #architecture #architecturephotography #architecturelover #copenhagen #visitdenmark #visitcopenhagen #modernarchitecture #krøyersplads #københavn #christianshavn #empatheticarchitecture

The Danish architect Jørn Utzon is best known for his designs of the Sydney Opera House which combined inspiration from Aztec pyramids and the structure of Palm leafs to create a building both synonymous with an entire continent and also, arguably, the most recognisable building of the 20th century. There was a fabulous exhibition about Utzon and his work at DAC which I can’t recommend enough. #OMA #oma #officeformetropolitanarchitecture #architecture #modernarchitecture #contemporaryarchitecture #architecturelover #architecturephotography #blox #bloxcopenhagen #kobenhaven #copenhagen #wonderfulwonderfulcopenhagen @oma.eu #denmark #danmark #danisharchitecture #danisharchitecturecentre @danisharchitecturecenter #bloxkøbenhavn #sydneyoperahouse #jornutzon #jørnutzon

Designed by OMA and only opened last Spring, Blox is a major new development in Copenhagen: combining the fabulous Danish Architecture Centre with a range of other cultural spaces along with a gym, restaurant, and more. Indeed, the very form of the building exemplifies this idea: the building essentially being a collection of different-shaped boxes stacked together that represents the multifunctional purpose of the building. The Danish Architecture Centre is a must-see in Copenhagen. #OMA #oma #officeformetropolitanarchitecture #architecture #modernarchitecture #contemporaryarchitecture #architecturelover #architecturephotography #blox #bloxcopenhagen #kobenhaven #copenhagen #wonderfulwonderfulcopenhagen @oma.eu #denmark #danmark #danisharchitecture #danisharchitecturecentre @danisharchitecturecenter #bloxkøbenhavn

Operaen, Copenhagen. Designed by Danish architect Henning Larsen (who also designed Plymouth’s own Roland Levinsky Building) at a cost of well over US$500 million: making it one of the most expensive opera houses ever constructed. Opened in 2005, it is still a controversial building in Copenhagen: Larsen himself declaring it his greatest failure. In our second night in Copenhagen, we went to see Johannes Strauss II’s operetta Die Fledermaus there. #opera #operahouse #operaen #operaenkøbenhavn #kobenhavn #copenhagen @operaen_ #henninglarsen #neofuturist #neofuturisticarchitecture #architecturelover #operalover #nationaloperahouseofdenmark #architecture #architecturephotography #diefledermaus #music #minibreak #citybreak #nighttoremember #modernarchitecture #contemporaryarchitecture

The Little Mermaid by Edvard Eriksen in Copenhagen. It is based off the eponymous story by Hans Christian Andersen. It has also been vandalised numerous times: including being disembodied several times and also blown off its rock using explosives. #thelittlemermaidstatue #thelittlemermaid #copenhagen #edvarderiksen #hanschristianandersen #københavn #denlillehavfrue #langelinie #denmark #danmark #iconic #statue #sculpture #danishart #danishsculpture
