Before anyone asks, no I’m not pregnant. That’s called a Meg-carries-her-weight-in-her-stomach-and-was-concentrating-so-much-on-lifting-her-hips-she-forgot-to-pull-in-her-belly bump. . Because of my injury, I couldn’t do standard reverse plank, so I tried a forearm version. That was hard! Hence the not-baby bump. 😅 . And Shiva pose is also out of the question right now. Another glimpse at my real practice. This is day 8/156, and I attempted straight forearmstand for the first time in over two months. I may not have held it for very long, but they both felt more calm and controlled than any of my previous straight forearmstands. . I kept all the little hops in the video, because I wanted to show reality. I don’t get up on the first try ... ever ... with forearmstand. Day 4 of #FoundationorFlair brings us compass and infinity pose. . Compass is an old favorite of mine. Though I just realized I don’t do it often in my practice. Gotta change that. . For our flair pose, I’m taking it under the sea today. (Where’s Sebastian when you need him? 🦀🎶) I figured the water may help my legs be more bouyant, so I could easily make the shape. . No such luck, though. For the most part I can figure out the top leg in this pose, but how in the world do you open up the bottom leg to make it look like an infinity sign??? Normally when forearmstand is on the pose lineup, I break out in a cold sweat. But for day 3 of #FoundationorFlair I was actually excited about this pose. . My regular practice of forearmstand is going much differently than it did last year. Instead of getting frustrated when I don’t achieve the pose, I’m managing to go into the practice without expectation, and that is making all the difference. . And since regular pincha practice is going so well, I figured why not do hollowback on the ledge of a building for the flair pose? I mean; what could possibly go wrong??!! . If my last two posts didn’t make me Insta-worthy, this one definitely will! 🤣😉 . I love the opening in the thoracic spine that hollowback gives. I don’t think I’ll ever do it without a wall, but I also have no desire to. Otherwise, I might be tempted to find the highest building ledge for Insta. . . A couple things to celebrate for day 2 of #FoundationorFlair: 1️⃣ This is the straightest my standing splits have ever been. (And I didn’t really warm up much, either.) I’ve always enjoyed this pose, because I love folds and hamstring stretches. 2️⃣ I didn’t slip off the wet rock and die while doing super soldier pose for the ‘gram. . Who am I kidding? I am so excited about this #FoundationorFlair non-challenge! This will be a great chance to work on real yoga poses and a chance to be extraaaa with Insta-yoga poses. . Today’s foundational pose is camel, and I always find this pose challenging. It would be easy if I just dumped into my lower back, but spreading the bend out across my spine is hard for me to do in this pose. . Today’s flair pose is floating camel. All the flair poses our hosts chose are already extraa, but I asked myself, “How can I make them extraaaa?” And then I remembered a key tenant of Insta-yoga is needlessly risking one’s life. . ⬅️ So ... . I give you floating camel at the edge of a cliff. Though now that I look at it, I really could’ve gotten closer to the edge and really dangled over the cliff. Oh well, lesson learned; next time - more danger! . Before I get comments either praising my bravery or condemning my stupidity, I promise no lives were risked. (Which I would hope would be obvious by how clearly edited the picture is!) It’s all in good fun, everyone. . As proof, the third picture is the original, taken in July 2018 because I can’t currently do this pose with my injured wrist. And even when my wrist is healthy, I can barely do this pose; it requires insane quad strength! . . It’s always so funny when Christine and I see a pose and think it will be so hard, and it turns out to be easy. Then other times we see one we think will be easy, and it takes repeated attempts to get it right. . This pose was the former. We both thought it would be so hard and didn’t actually know if we’d be able to do it. (Okay, honesty time - I didn’t know if I’d be able to do it. I always trust Christine will be able to do a pose.) But we actually got it on the first try. This is our second attempt because we wanted to make the arches a little more pronounced, but it could’ve been one and done. . Now, more honesty time - I used a wall. Which I’m guessing you already knew. I’m posting more than I thought I was going to, but I’m thoroughly enjoying my pincha practice and want to document it. . This morning I tried #puppypress. Just like yesterday’s teapot legs, it didn’t happen, but I got farther than I imagined I would. . I was doing it just to see where I’m at but didn’t think I’d even be able to get my second foot off the ground, much less attempt to straighten the other leg. In reality, if I can get my hips just a little farther back, I think I’d be able to hold (and even out) the straddle. . And I never would’ve known if I wouldn’t have tried. In the past I probably would’ve thought “You’re not going to be able to do it, so why try?” 🙈 (I’m a little embarrassed to admit that, but it’s true.) Or maybe I would’ve tried, but I would’ve been so frustrated with the result I got. (Again, embarrassing but true.) And I definitely wouldn’t have posted the video. 😂 . But now I’m proud to show the reality of my practice, even though it couldn’t be called a “success” based on the execution of the pose. Because this is where I’m at, and the success is that I’m totally embracing it! . Is there something you’re not doing because you don’t think you’ll be successful? Today’s pincha practice didn’t result in a breakthrough or a milestone, but it still taught me a lot about practicing without expectation. . I’ve seen these cute “teapot” legs lately and thought I’d give them a try. Leg extended definitely requires more core engagement than knee to chest. I managed a few seconds hang time - during which I was constantly adjusting trying to find the balance point. Never happened, but that’s okay. . Near the end I realized I was kicking up more desperately, rather than trying to lift up with control. That’s when I stopped practicing for the day. I recognized my attachment on the end result and reminded myself that’s not what this is about. And I walked away perfectly happy with the practice, despite not achieving the shape. That may be the first time I can honestly say that. I would argue that’s a greater accomplishment than last week’s long hold. . I also fell out for the first time in 2019. I had been so surprised my previous 3 practices that I hadn’t fallen out. And I’m truly glad I did today. First, it reminded me that I can. Second, it helped me see what I need to engage differently to stay up. Third, it reinforced that perfection is not the goal. . So much to learn! But also lots of time to learn it. . Happy new year! 🥳 . Today is the first day of my commitment to practice pincha 3 days a week this year. The purpose is not to master pincha but instead to learn to practice without expectation. . I’m only one day in, and I’ve already learned a good lesson - No expectations doesn’t just mean practicing without an end result in mind; it also means not judging the end result. I can’t walk away calling a certain practice “good” or “bad.” That would mean I’m comparing it to a set expectation. . That was really hard for me this morning, because I got my longest freestanding pincha hold, so my first instinct was to call this is “good” pincha practice. But I’m not going to do that, because when I inevitably don’t hold it that long another day, I would then feel it was “bad.” . So, as hard as it is for me, I’m trying not to expect any result or judge what comes. This will be a very interesting year of pincha practice! . Apparently, you prefer me upside down. 🙃 Or with my two beautiful blonde friends. 👯‍♀️ (Can’t say that I blame you!) . This has been a year full of growth: 🌸 From a pure numbers perspective, I went from fewer than 1,000 to over 8,000 followers. But as much as I appreciate all of you, this is not about numbers for me. 🌸 From a pose perspective, 2018 brought crane, consistent “flying” arm balances, freestanding forearmstand, and freestanding handstand. But as much as I love being able to do these, this is not about poses for me. 🌸 From a social perspective, I made so many friends on IG this year. As an introvert with a small group of real life friends, this has meant a lot to me. ❤️ 🌸 The biggest growth of 2018 was my increase in patience and non-attachment (okay, maybe not non-attachment ... less attachment might be more accurate 😂) spending the second half of the year injured. This is what yoga has to teach me, and it’s made me find gratitude for my injury. . For 2019, I’m hoping to continue to increase my ability to practice without attachment to the end result. So, I’m committing to practice pincha (the pose that causes me the most frustration) three times a week in 2019. Not with the goal of making any shape or holding it for a certain amount of time, but to learn to practice it without expectation or hope for a specific result. There may be rug burn on my feet after these. 😂 I struggled to turn all the way around while staying up on my toes, so this was another great full body balance challenge for me. . A morning full of shoulder openers is a good morning for me. I’m sorry Holly isn’t feeling well, but I do love the relaxed options she gave us for today. I went a little off script on the third one and did a couple shoulder stretches I learned from @l.schaub and #fijimcalpine. They don’t look like much, but the stretch along the side of the neck and top of the shoulder is amazing. I look like I’m in pain, but my left side is always tight. Trust me; that look means it hurts so good. 😉 . I hope Holly and her family feel well soon. Holly has us coming back with a vengeance after our holidays off, and I love it! 😅 . When I saw her do these “pistol hops,” the first thing I thought was, “She’s amazing!” The second thing was, “How in the world am I going to do this?” 😂 .
