Just finished this phenomenal book(birthday gift from my sis @artfury , thanks!!!).
I had been following Theranos for a while but it dropped off my radar when I started my PhD courses... I always had scepticism for the claims. A little box that could perform hundreds of tests with a single drop of blood... yes, allegedly including different methodologies, simultaneously. Little did I know the full extent of deceit and fraud.
It was telling to hear the first hand accounts of mismanagement, bullying, and tweaking quality control numbers and the general quality system. The book did a great job covering the basis of quality laboratory medicine practises (well, I believe so anyway) and gives outsiders an opportunity to look inside of the lab business. It is heartbreaking to know that patients were hurt by the false claims and cavalier attitudes of Holmes and Balwani. It is likely only time will tell the exact numbers of those impacted.
From a business perspective, one I don't read about often, it is insane to consider the blind trust investors placed in Holmes and the impact of nepotism and connections play in the funding and development cycle of start ups.
I think a must read for anyone in health care, especially those in lab medicine!
Nummies! Today did!!
Caught up with one of my besties, got bath bombs for this weekend at the night market, Moo moos in a waffle cone, and got the new PVR box!
Starting to feel like I need some down time.
When Mommy tells you a big number, one too big for you to count, but you want to go on a walk anyway but then realize that even though you can't count that high it means that it is too hot when you are a big wolfy face.

Beautiful flowers from my sweet friend Lei!!
Just finished this amazing and terrifying book.
Krakauer, an investigative journalist, weaves the story of the Lafferty brothers murders with the complicated and violent history of the early Mormon church up to present day. Something about this faith has always fascinated me. Maybe that it's genesis is so modern. I had no idea the bloody past and the tragedy of the Mountain Meadows Massacre... look it up! The underlying racism, discrimination, violence, undermining the legal system... this book really showed elements that I didn't realize before. I do understand that there are many sides to every story as well. That being said Krakauer provides a well referenced and extensive review, presenting different sides and the disagreements about the past. The fundamentalism and polygamy is another rabbit hole that defies belief in certain cases given that many of its underlying tenets are based with a subservient woman and children raised to breed and not critically think.
I believe my favourite quote is, "I think people within the religion... are probably happier,on the whole, than people on the outside. But some things in life are more important than being happy. Like being free to think for yourself."
