I'm so excited to get the greenhouse frame set up! It's actually a carport kit that we're going to cover with plastic to make it into a greenhouse. Take that winter. โ„๐ŸŒฑ๐ŸŒฑ๐ŸŒฑ We're still trying to decide what plastic to use. What has worked for you or what would you steer us away from? . . . . . . #gardening #backyardgarden #backyardgardening #questions #urbanorganicgardener #iamcountryside #backyardfarming #homesteading #farm #sustainable #fall #winter #greenhouse #diy #growfoodnotlawns #organic #motherearthnews #pnw #washington #westernwashington #litenhagefarm

We lost our Sweet Pea this morning. Everyone was fine when I closed up their coop last night. When I let them out in the morning I realized one less came out for breakfast. I called with no response and then looked in the coop with the hope that she was laying an egg earlier than usual. Instead I found her lying on her side. Her eyes closed and feet tucked under her as if she had simply fallen off the short roost. She may have died on the roost since there was no sign of struggle. This has been a day of tears and frustration. She was not egg bound and had no visible intestinal parasites or blockages or signs of respiratory issues during her necropsy. The only thing that wasn't normal was that half of her liver was a pale orange and she had a lot of fat around her heart. I buried her beneath the raspberry plants she loved spending so much time under. I take comfort in the fact that she lived her short life with green grass to forage and flower bushes to rest and dust bathe under. She had humans to jump on and snuggle with. She knew nothing of cages and the fear and pain factory farm egg laying hens live. She was/is loved and will be missed more than is socially acceptable to admit. -Rebekah . . . . . #chickens #backyardchickens #chickensofinstagram #urbanchickens #eggs #backyardfarming #backyardgardening #homesteading #farm #farmette #sustainable #iamcountryside #backyardpoultrymag #backyardchickenproject #motherearthnews #pnw #washington #westernwashington #litenhagefarm

One of the things I love about having chickens is that real eggs don't always look "perfect". Crystal surprised me with this oddball.โค . . . . . . #chickens #backyardchickens #chickensofinstagram #urbanchickens #eggs #backyardfarming #backyardgardening #homesteading #farm #farmette #sustainable #iamcountryside #backyardpoultrymag #backyardchickenproject #motherearthnews #pnw #washington #westernwashington #litenhagefarm

Well, I learned I should thin the carrots from now on. ๐Ÿ˜„ I think I'll plant them sparsely too. I only pulled the bigger ones and hope the little ones now have room to catch up. Not the yield we were hoping for but I had a good laugh at the intertwined ones. ๐Ÿ’ . . . . . . #gardening #backyardgarden #backyardgardening #urbanorganicgardener #carrots #backyardfarming #homesteading #farm #sustainable #fall #organic #nature #blackthumb #greenthumb #pnw #washington #westernwashington #litenhagefarm

It looks a bit sad now but I pulled all the spent sweet corn stalks out of the garden today. ๐ŸŒฝ Now we can actually get to the pumpkins. ๐ŸŽƒ๐ŸŽƒ๐ŸŽƒ The compost pile is the new home for the stalks. Once broken down they can replenish the same ground with nutrients next year. โ™ป I've read you can grind the stalks for chicken fodder but I don't think I would have the tools to do this...unless I used the machete all day. ๐Ÿ’ช If you have ideas I'd love to hear them. . . . . . . #gardening #backyardgarden #backyardgardening #questions #urbanorganicgardener #iamcountryside #corn #backyardfarming #homesteading #farm #sustainable #summer #organic #motherearthnews #pnw #washington #westernwashington #litenhagefarm

My baking skills are not the best. Thankfully they're sufficient enough to sterilize potting soil and egg shells. ๐Ÿ˜„ Once the soil cools I can transplant the broccoli, brussels sprouts and swiss chard seedlings into larger containers. The egg shells will be crushed and powdered and used on the garden next year. . . . . . . #gardeningaddict #gardening #transplanting #planting #wintergarden #backyardgarden #backyardgardening #farm #farmette #backyardfarming #homesteading #nowaste #pnw #westernwashington #washington #litenhagefarm

Super easy meal. Scrambled eggs, heirloom tomatoes, pepper jack cheese, garlic chives, sea salt & cayenne pepper. I used eggs from our hens and the heirloom tomatoes & garlic chives from our garden.๐Ÿ… I love using this little cast iron pan that was Chris' grandparents. What do you like cooking in cast iron? ๐Ÿณ . . . . . . #cooking #food #instafood #castironskillet #castironcookware #castironpan #healthyfood #vegitarianfood #glutenfree #glutenfreefood #farm #homegrown #homemade #homesteading #backyardgardening #pnw #westernwashington #washington #litenhagefarm
