It can’t be avoided- when you are a chicken tender, everyone in your life buys you chicken things. Chicken trinkets, chicken magnets, chicken birthday cards, chicken aprons, chicken kitchen gadgets & tools, chicken leggings & t shirts, and now, thanks to my thoughtful father @markeltumlin I am now the proud wearer of chicken socks. A surprise package in the mail revealed TWO PAIRS! When one is splattered with chicken poo, I’ll be happy to have a backup pair💩 Thanks DaddyO! : : #crazychickenlady #chickentender #backyardchickens #backyardpoultry #chickensocks #chickensofinstagram #earlychristmaspresent #thanksdad

As requested, here is the giant egg cracked open! And as a bonus, swipe to see me crack the fairy egg too. You’re welcome. : : #backyardchickens #chickensofinstagram #chickeneggs #eggyolk #eggyolkporn #backyardpoultry #chickensofig

A handful of odd eggs- the darker brown one on top is about the size of a regular egg, but its completely oval shaped/ there’s no narrow end. The lightest colored one is another little fairy egg from one of our teenagers- probably someone’s first! And the mondo egg on the left?! Oooowf. That must’ve hurt.😬 it looks as if two eggs merged into one giant egg inside her oviduct. I’m willing to bet that there are at least 2 yolks in there. Anyone want to challenge me? : : #chickens #eggs #whichcamefirst #whichcamefirstthechickenortheegg #hashtagsarestupid #backyardchickens #backyardpoultry #hensandchicks #nest #eggnest #chickeneggs #chickensofinstagram #urbanfarm #farmlife #crazychickenlady

Post rain harvest and the last few tomatoes hanging on to spent plants. And! I spy a wee little fairy egg!👀 Looks like one of our teenage hens has laid her first egg! We have at least 8 who are due to start laying anytime, and 6 of those will lay a light brown/pink egg, so without a spy camera in the nest (which we have and may set up!), there’s no way of knowing for sure who gifted us this one. In the cold of winter, when our older hens are molting or reducing egg production due to less sunlight, it’s always fun when the teenagers that hatched in Spring start to lay their first eggs. Each season there’s a reason to be excited and something to look forward to. I can’t describe how much year round joy my little flock gives me #crazychickenlady

I just had to post these blurry snaps of Gretel and I for #chickenselfiesunday . All the rain has turned the chicken area into a muddy mess, a first time experience for chickens hatched earlier this year, and apparently Gretel didn’t know how to navigate very well. I found her with a full head of mud dreadlocks, took her inside to clean her off (she LOVED the pampering), and then fixed her hairdo into a high pony so she can get around easier in the rain & mud. How freakin cute is she?!?! She may or may not have tried to peck my eyes out during the photo shoot, but fortunately I was in a forgiving mood. I call her Gretel because I’m always telling her “You’re so cute I’m going to eat you up!” like the witch in the story, which really isn’t something a chicken wants to hear. But then I show her that by “eating her up” I really mean that I’m going to shower her with cuddles, and she can get on board with that. Seriously how cute is she?????? : : : #meetmyflock #freerange #freerangechickens #poultryofinstagram #urbanfarming #urbanfarm #backyardchickens #backyardpoultry #raisingchickens #citychickens #chickenlover #chickens #chickenlady #crazychickenlady #motherofchickens #smallfarm #homesteadlife #homesteadher #babychicks #chickensofig #chickensofinstagram #mypetchickenofficial #thechickenworld #bayareafarm #mypetchicken #citychicks

I can’t bring myself to harvest these peppers. Two colors on the same plant?! I can’t remember where I got this transplant, but it was definitely from some big box shop where I found them on sale, which got me thinking: is this just a result of cross pollination, or chemical genetic modification? Or am I just impatient and that green bell is going to eventually turn yellow? Any other Californians growing bell peppers in November? Any gardeners want to chime in? So many questions! 🌱 🌱 🌱 #yearroundgardening #gardening #imperfectproduce #bellpeppers #yellowbellpepper #organicgardening #frontyardgarden #lateseason #bellsinnovember

Thrilled doesn’t even begin to explain the twinkle I felt in my heart when I laid my eyes on this hidden nest! The girls have been suffering a painful moult the past couple months, thus their eggs have been few and far between. But it looks as though we may be close to the end of this season, and starting the season of first eggs very soon. I’m pretty sure that these pale eggs are being laid by our black on black Ayam Cemani pullets- the first of this year’s newbies to start laying. The single olive green egg is a sign that Ninja has completed her molt and we should start to see a full variety of colors from the seasoned ladies again sometime soon. : : : #backyardchickens #eggbasket #eggnest #chickensofinstagram #chickeneggs #greeneggs #eastereggs #ayemcemani #backyardpoultry #freerange #freerangechickens #smallfarm #moltingseason

Yolandi. You’d never know it now, but this chicken has spent the better part of this year almost completely bald! We are still unsure why it happened, but sometime in Jan/Feb, she slowly started losing feathers, overpreening, and eventually outright plucking herself down to the skin. We got very worried and did everything we could for her, but she kept getting balder and meaner. If you scroll through, you’ll see the first few photos I took of her when we started noticing bald patches around her face & neck, and you’ll see how she started sleeping on the floor of the coop in poop- when we tried to move her she would scream bloody murder. We think her skin was painful and got poked with her spiked quills when picked up. And her raw skin was an invite for other birds to peck at her, which also likely hurt, so maybe the poo piles were more peaceful for her at the time. I didn’t take any pictures of her at her worst, but you’ll see a couple videos of her eating with the rest of the flock- you can’t miss her bright pink flesh in contrast with the dozens of other healthy looking birds. During the worst of it, she would guard the food bowl inside the coop and not let anyone else inside; she started mounting other birds and snatching wigs and behaving like a real fucking bitch. If she’d been any old regular bird, we may have just culled her and put an end to it. But Yolandi, like her sister Ninja, lays glorious green eggs, except instead of soft olive green like Ninja’s, Yolandi’s eggs are a gorgeous TEAL color. Anyway, fast forward to molting season (fall), and our girl has transformed and been reborn, better than ever. Her feathers are so soft, and she re-learned how to enjoy the comforts of lap time cuddles. She seemed to relish modeling for the camera in her new digs, and rejoined the flock after a good pampering session with her beak held high and an extra waddle in her walk. I’m thrilled to have this fluff monster back, and that I no longer have to explain when houseguests gasped in horror: “oh my god what is wrong with that one?!” It’s incredible what a new outfit can do for a lady’s self confidence and attitude. Amirite ladies?👚👗👘😝

I’ve missed quite a few #fluffybuttfridays and #chickenselfiesundays in recent weeks, so here’s a quick one to let you know I haven’t forgotten; the chooks & kooks are still here! : : : #backyardchickens #chickenselfiesunday #chickenselfie #chickentender #backyardpoultry #polishchicken #chickensofinstagram

Thank you California! It’s November 11 and I’m still harvesting big juicy tomatoes, green beans, and peppers, (well, those that the rats haven’t scarfed down), and many of the plants are still flowering. Despite the chill in the air and the changing colors of leaves, my little garden is still pumping out the summer goods and I am grateful. Fall/winter plantings quietly dig deep roots and wait their turn to shine, while I collect seeds, reflect on this year’s lessons and make plans for all the things I’ll do differently next season. What are you harvesting in your gardens this month? : : : #summerveggies #tomatoes #fallgarden #longseason #backyardgarden #growyourownfood #growsomethinggreen #homegrown #organic #organicgardening #permaculture #sustainablefarming #yearroundgardening

Best attempt at a family voting snap! @kevlarskimmer had to leave work early to make it to the polls before heading to his night gig, so Pig and I walked to the polling place where I dropped off my mail in ballot to meet him. I prefer to get my ballot in the mail so I can slowly pour over it and be sure I don’t make any mistakes; I always get flustered in those little booths and feel like I’m taking a test! But instead of mailing it in, I usually drop it off on voting day. Regardless of how you do it, make sure to get your vote in! Just a little over an hour left on the West Coast. #vote #ivoted #youshouldvotetoo

Eggberta. Second in command to our flock’s #1 hen Sick Chick, Eggberta is her formidable frenemie, opponent, right hand gal pal, and heir to the throne. She was one of our first chicks hatched at home when we started doing this 3 years ago (she’s the chick in the last pic!) from a clutch of eggs I bought from a #backyardchickens enthusiast I found on Craigslist. We got a mixed dozen and had no idea what we would get! As a Black Copper Maran chicken, Eggberta lays the most beautiful, dark, rich chocolate colored eggs. She has consistently been the best mother hen in the flock- she raised two clutches back to back this year! And she is one. tough. mother. She is fiercely protective of both her babies and herself- this is not a cuddly hen by any means folks! She has jump kicked me, pecked me HARD dozens of times, bull rushed me...she is fearless and big bodied and not to be messed with. She’s perfect💖. : : : meetmyflock #blackcoppermarans #freerange #freerangechickens #poultryofinstagram #backyardpoultry #raisingchickens #citychickens #motherhen #chickens #chickenlady #crazychickenlady #motherofchickens #smallfarm #homesteadlife #homesteadher #babychicks #chickensofig #chickensofinstagram #mypetchickenofficial #thechickenworld #bayareafarm #mypetchicken #citychicks
