Healthy back and strong core are connected. What's the use of strength if one cannot be stable. What's the use of stability if one cannot explore the strength in it. So I may be able to hold a plank position for 10minute, but those 10minutes are of not much use if I cannot translate my strength into movement. Yoga teaches us how to shift weight, how to engage one particular muscle group and completely surrender other body parts, various transitions from one movement to another, consciousness, awareness and the list continues .It brings grace, stability and strength to body. Be it dance, athletics or any fitness form ,yoga can be the way to build up mobility and dynamism in our practice. It can be a lifestyle to pave way for a different way of life. "we carry inside us the wonders we seek outside us"- Rumi This is what I do when I am early and waiting for you all to join me for ashtanga practice class @beyondstudiomumbai Ok so when I started practicing the primary series even the first few asanas use to exhaust me. It was not the difficulty level but sometimes my restlessness and sometimes my lack of patience . I wanted to rush through the series ,but each time I waited and completed the series ,each time I took deep breathes to relax my restlessness ,each time I focussed more on my gaze, I became more stronger, yes for sure physically but also mentally, and emotionally. To complete the series everytime inspite of the voice in my head saying- let's leave it ,or it's too tiring, or it's too boring, or let's try that new posture we saw on Instagram, was an achievement. And that achievement showed me true strength lies not only in our muscles or heart but deep in our consciousness. BACKBENDS AND EMOTIONS Ok so to tell the truth I enjoy the physical practice so much that sometimes I feel I practice yoga for its physicality only. But slowly as I read more, as I became more conscious, as I started paying attention to my inner body I realised yoga and emotions are entwined. Our mind and body works in harmony. When we practice backbends or hip openers we tap into these muscle memories stored sub consciously in our body. We don't acknowledge them, they are not even suppressed but they are there lingering inside the knots of our body. It's like memory of that smell from rajma curry my mother use to cook when I was a kid. Even now sometimes when I cross a similar smell suddenly that memory swells up to my awareness bringing the taste to my mouth too. Similarly backbend brings up so many emotions and feelings to the surface, they need not be too loud or subtle , they just exist, sometimes in form of exhaustion, or ectasy or deep sadness or just a fleeting feeling. As we extend the front part of our body and consciously work on lengthening each vertebrae in a backbend we pierce through all the knots that exist dormant for so long in our spine ,hips and front of our body thus stiring energy flow inside our body. Yoga is completely experiential. If you have never came across such sensations that's fine, or if you have felt different after a asana practice session but never paid much focus to it that is fine and a conscious choice, if you have felt something very similar to what I have shared than also it's fine. ASHTANGA YOGA PRIMARY SERIES- HOW TO PRACTICE JUMP BACKS:- 1) start with pulling stomach in and pulling thigh to your chest as you continue to protract your shoulders transitioning to lolasana, 2) leg pull ups are important to build thigh and hip flexor strength. don't let your back sink and only pulse the leg not entire body 3) push-ups in lolasana builds immense strength in shoulders. Shift your weight forward as you do in chaturanga. Hug the thigh close to the chest as we have practiced in the first exercise. 4)lolasana push up and than extend the leg back as you go for chaturanga dandasana.
