(Day 213: Breastfeeding - 13 months)
Happy 2nd day of #worldbreastfeedingweek! We are officially 13 months into this beautiful journey since Charlie turned 13 months old today. Firstly, I'm obsessed with these shirts from @natthenaturalmom! I LOVE that the word "still" on Charlotte's t-shirt is in quotations! For some reason in the U.S., it's a common misconception that 1 year is a stopping point for nursing. Literally the rest of the world views 1 year as a milestone, NOT an end point. I'm with the majority on this one! The World Health Organization states that babies and toddlers should ideally be breastfed until a MINIMUM of 2 years of age. Get on board with supporting this research, America! There are SO many reasons we love breastfeeding: For one, the extent of Charlie's sickness has been 1 barely stuffy nose in her entire life... and I work at an elementary school so that's saying something. For two, and beyond, Charlie genuinely loves nursing. The bond it has helped us build together is amazing. It's incredibly fulfilling to be able to provide biologically perfect nutrition for my child in this way. It calms her when she's upset or hurt. It helps her to fall asleep easily. It has helped her grow and thrive. Her chunky thighs are my favorite things ever. I have been asked multiple times "How long do you plan on doing that?" with the "doing that" part spoken in a disapproving tone. My go-to response has become a blunt "As long as she wants!" Because I've said it once and I'll say it repeatedly - it's HER decision when we stop and although that will be a very bittersweet day for both of us, hopefully it is in the very distant future. ❤

How do you keep her going? Like what if a child wants to wean? My daughter is only 8 months so I’m not quite sure how that works! Please help me out! I’ll have to explain to family members why I’m “still” breastfeeding so I need more information and your experience has been helpful!

💕 love this! Maylee weaned herself around 15 months, but I was prepared to go far longer if she wanted. You go momma!

@icantfindholly I think a big part is always offering to nurse before offering solids, even if they don't nurse much at least offer it first. We also still nurse to sleep for both naps and bedtime. I've heard a great way to continue nursing is to not break that milk = sleep connection too early! Plus, now that my daughter is 13 months she verbally asks for 'mimi' ("milkies") so I never refuse her and always let her nurse whenever she requests, even if it's only for a minute or two.

What size did you purchase your shirt in??!!
charliecheesefries, 24 days ago
@cecelia.sarah Mine's a small and Charlie's is a 3T! The adult shirt fabric is really soft and a bit stretchy and the children's T is more like a classic t-shirt material. We love them both! 😊
