DJs, are you tapped into the "DJ borg" as @djjohnnyjuice puts it?
Know this, to be in the possession of two Technic 1200s and an S9 doesn't necessarily mean you're conjoined to the creative field that exists within DJing. It simply means you're the owner of DJ gear. But to understand how to operate the God space you're facing, in a way that allows you to move between the point in which you cannot perform a scratches like the "Flare" to the point in which you can, is a level of DJ awareness that honestly very few reach.
The outcome of my recent Civil War Battle for Supremacy exposed certain weaknesses in some of my #brolicarmy soldiers. Particularly within the realm of #scratching. And so in the last month, I've had multiple students email and text me messages like, "Damn man, I need to learn how to scratch better..." or "I really really need to get my scratches together... Compulsion to go fast is a killer."
I strongly feel if these students, and DJs in general, established a better connection with the basics of #scratching, growing as a scratcher wouldn't elude them. Instead, the need to catch up with what more experienced scratchers are doing leads them down the path of impatience. In their haste, they attempt to make the leap from failing to make a "Transformer" scratch sound interesting to wanting to learn how to perform "Boomerangs". That, to me, is to big of a jump and disrespects the process of evolving as a scratcher. And so it is my goal with #TheMixMasterIceScratchChallenge to help my students master the small variables that go into scratching.
"We didn't have name for scratches back then Rob. We were scratching out of the love we felt towards Hip Hop as a whole and had no idea of the impact we'd have years later." ~ @mixmasterice
