I have been meaning to post about Her Body and Other Parties written by Carmen Maria Machado for a while. 💚💚💚 When I bought it in the fabulous @gaysthewordbookshop, I was advised the stories had a fairytale vibe particularly the first story and I completely agree with that description. Machado uses the uncanny, the weird, horror and sex to explore themes. The first story, ‘The Husband Stitch’ which is a retelling of ‘The Green Ribbon’ is a fairy tale filled with the grimness of Grimm and powerfully portrays themes of ownership, micro aggressions and loss of autonomy. I loved the surreal vignettes contained in the story ‘Especially Heinous - 272 Views of Law & Order: SVU’ which explored the love of the TV and film industry for the young female victim. It has particularly unsettling supernatural imagery - the ghost girls with bells for eyes who had their hammers removed by detective doppelgängers. 🛎 😱 Machado cannot be boxed into one genre - she has a fresh voice which I am looking forward to reading more of in the future 💫 I cannot do this book justice but Nicole Flattery’s review in the White Review is excellent.
One of my favourite views 💙💙💙 We went to Ballycotton yesterday and were very fortunate for the clouds to break up and see that fabulous vista in its best light.
Taken yesterday in the back garden at home ❤️ Lots of bees buzzing about the lavender and hydrangea. #ireland_gram
Throw back to our lovely walk in Monkstown earlier in the week. I love the tranquility at that time of the evening as everything is starting to go to sleep. #vitaminsea🌊 #discoverireland
