one of the coolest things about #southwarkcathedral is all of the history: in the back of the church, you can see all the layers of archaeology from the remains of a #romanroad to the bones of the #norman priory to a medieval stone coffin to the arch of a #delft kiln. there was also an exhibit of art made based off archaeological items found in the area, including an Isis and these neat Father Thames coins. and last but not least, a wooden carved life-size knight from the 1200s, because why not?
lots of monuments and resting places, including to Shakespeare, who i guess attended here, and Lancelot Andrewes. also pictured: a very neat cope made out of trash washed up on the south bank of the Thames as part of an eco-awareness effort.
London photo bomb the first: i have been to london before, but it’s been 13 years, and at the time i had very limited funds and time. this trip i wanted to revisit a couple places i remembered liking, but not having seen much of, including the Southwark Cathedral. so, after breakfast, i took the bus in and spent a bit of time poking around, and it was just as cool as I remembered. parts of it date back well over a thousand years, and the building itself is lovely.
also got to see @nancykerrmusic live in concert, which was a magnificent and slightly surreal experience. she’s just as wonderful live as the many years of playing her albums would make me believe, and i am so happy with the incredible serendipity that made it all line up. 😊
