For Day 1, let’s take a look at #fayum portraits 🔎
These are funerary portraits dating 1st-3rd century AD, painted by Greek Egyptian painters during the Roman occupation of Egypt. Applied on #mummies ⚱️like funerary masks, they are one of the earliest form of #portraiture .
⚱️Any visual similarities with #byzantineicon must face the conundrum of hundreds of years between the sudden demise of these portraits (when Christianity brought very different burial recommendations) and the apparition of icons. ⚱️Such #encaustic portrait techniques may have been secretly transmitted by generation of artists themselves, since none of the buried Fayum portraits were available for observation and practice. 🔎Want to know more?
