I have seen folks posting their oldest Facebook photo and their newest to show their growth. I am too proud of my change to much simplify the grown in one shot. Here are five photos 3 to 4 years apart. . None of these photos show what my life was like these years; they are merely a glimpse into one day I experienced during that year. . #1: 2018, last year climbing. #2: 2014, fresh out of graduate school. #3: 2010, first year of undergrad. #4: 2007, high school. #5: 2004, middle school.

Aside from being a climbing coach, I am a Master's level Behavior Clinician. I work with youth who have experienced immense trauma and currently live in a residential facility. Working one on one with these kiddos means there's never a dull moment. It also means I need a lot of self-care time. Although I love climbing, some days my body doesn't feel like it can really pull hard after an emotionally difficult day at work. . Streaming on #TwitchTV is another way I have found to chill. I started streaming years ago, here and there, one or twice, but I didn't really focus hard on it. I had other things happening in my life that required more focus. Now that I am more settled in my life, this has become an amazing outlet to detox and enjoy company while doing something I enjoy. . I was invited to #TwitchAffiliate status in December. And as I finish up my 2019 goals, I have decided to create some goals for my #Twitch channel. . Making goals is scary because you might fail. You might struggle through attempting to get anything that feels like success. But how do you experience success if you don't aim for it? . Here's a photo from #DreamHackAtlanta from November of 2018 where I learned about the game #RealmRoyale that I have been streaming the most. It's one of the only photos I have from that convention, mainly because I was so busy with all of the expo hall.

Back home in Rhode Island, I had experienced homelessness multiple times in my life, as recent as 2014 when I graduated from graduate school. When I first moved out to Indiana in July of 2016, new friends would invite me to climbing trips and I struggled to associate sleeping in my car or a tent with pleasure. Disassociating from trauma is hard, especially when it comes into play when you least expect it. . The year 2018 was a huge change for me; I longed for nights sleeping in my tent so I could wake up and climb the next morning. . Trauma doesn't define you. Trauma informs your choices and builds up your resilience. Things can change and your brain will surprise you with how strong you really are. . I was privileged enough to have have experienced climbing trips in 7 total states in the year 2018, 6 of which included outdoor trips: Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, Kentucky, Alabama, Tennessee, Rhode Island. . You are strong. You are resilient. You deserve the best. . Pictured is my first outdoor climbing trip of 2019 to the #MadRiverGorge in Ohio. Each time I place a @climbstuffdotcom order, I donated 5% of my order to the @ohioclimberscoalition so they can continue to gain more access for future climbers in the area.

It feels weird posting a video from 2018 in 2019 without intending to be a #tbt, but here's one from my most recent trip home to Rhode Island on Christmas Eve. I went bouldering outside in the morning and then when the snow turned to rain, I went inside to finish up. This problem was the epitome of New England bouldering and no place like home to target your weaknesses, right? 🤷🏽‍♀️ . 2018 felt like my most recent trip home. There were days that were beautiful and then there were days when the rain came, but ultimately I went back inside to be with the ones I love. . I met amazing people in 2018 and I distanced myself from those who were causing pain. I advocated for myself and others. I didn't bend on my morals. I had some good days and some bad days, but those will not define me. . I have a lot of goals for 2019 and no one is going to stand in my way.

This past week home in Rhode Island was great. I was able to see some great friends, get matching/themed tattoos with said friends, help a friend buy a car, and climb in 30° temps on granite boulders. It doesn't get much better than that. . This video is of my send of Tell No Lies (V4) in the #LincolnWoods. This was my first of it's grade out there. Prior to this trip, I had only touched one thing above V1 in the woods because I told myself that I am not a boulderer. Only ever getting on the "easy" stuff made it easy to only experience success, but that isn't why I climb. . I climb to challenge myself, to prove that I can do more. In order to succeed, we must fail, which is mostly what I do when I boulder. But that isn't always a bad thing. We were taught to show perfection, but every fall is a learning moment and another chance at reflection. . Push yourself out of your comfort zone and you'll be surprised with what you can do.

This week was busy, personally and professionally. Over the weekend, my climbing team competed in regionals. I had kiddos crying from their expectation of their performance not being met and others blushing with pride at their placement. After watching their climbs, I was so psyched to jump on these comp problems, specifically because they aren't my traditional style. Sadly, I had a root canal shortly after, making it really challenging to do anything physical. . I could have used the muscle relaxers and pain killers as a damn good excuse to do nothing. But this is life. Not every day is easy. Not every photo you take will make you smile. Not every video will make you feel proud. But that isn't a good enough reason for complacency. . These two videos are wildly different. The first video was from this morning before taking a shower. It was already my third set of pull-ups. I have been up to 5 for each entry into the bathroom. The second video is a #fbf #flashback #flashbackfriday video of my second and third ever pull-up attempts from late April. . I had people who believed in me in April. Now I have myself. I believe in my success as much as you should believe in yours. . Training doesn't have to be hard; it just had to be consistent. I started this pull-up training program about 2 months ago and I've gone from one for every entry to now 5. . Today is the day to start working forward. If you're looking for a sign, this is it. Take that step forward. You can do this. I believe in you more than you know. . @climbstuffdotcom has a huge sale right now on training items for climbing. Go order your home training items and take a huge step forward in your progress. . #progress #pride #proud #browngirlsclimb #girlswhoclimbrocks #climblikeagirl #ladycrushers #slaydies #sladies #training #climbstuffdotcom #climberlife #womenwhoclimb #womenwhorockclimb #womenwhoclimbrocks #pullups #tattooedpeopledoitbetter #tattoo #tattooedgirls #tattooed

As a climber, I need to think outside the box. As a 5'1" climber with a -3 ape index, I have to be extra creative. . It's easy to feel defeated. It's easy to say "well, it wasn't set for someone like me," but what was, really? What was ever developed specific for me? My identities have offered oppression at every corner, but that doesn't mean I cannot work to overcome the system. . If you continue to look at the struggle instead of how to overcome, you will forever stay in one place. Find those like you and push each other past their difficulties. Work forward together. . #browngirlsclimb #girlswhoclimbrocks #climblikeagirl #ladycrushers #slaydies #sladies #climbing #climbstuffdotcom #climberlife #womenwhoclimb #womenwhorockclimb #womenwhoclimbrocks #bouldering #theadventuregap #tattooedpeopledoitbetter #tattoo #tattooedgirls #tattooed

“i want to apologize to all the women i have called pretty. before i’ve called them intelligent or brave. i am sorry i made it sound as though something as simple as what you’re born with is the most you have to be proud of when your spirit has crushed mountains from now on i will say things like, you are resilient or, you are extraordinary. not because i don’t think you’re pretty. but because you are so much more than that” - rupi kaur . #browngirlsclimb #girlswhoclimbrocks #climblikeagirl #ladycrushers #slaydies #sladies #climbing #climbstuffdotcom #climberlife #womenwhoclimb #womenwhorockclimb #womenwhoclimbrocks #rupikaur #women #feminism

The team I coach has a large quantity of competitors who made it to Regionals this year, which is this Saturday. Because the competitors are not permitted in the building during this week, we are having practice in another gym in the city. I stopped by this weekend to scope out some nice problems to have them work on. This one was one of my favorites. It is my style but also required dynamic movements for little arms and legs like mine. . Coaching kids requires you to analyze their performance and how they can be successful. It forces you to look in the mirror. The way we as coaches, adults, and humans engage with each other is repeated by the kids. Every time you cheer someone on, they notice. Every time you acknowledge to someone how hard they tried, they notice. Every time you get off the wall and say "wow, I suck" or "that was awful," they notice. . If you cannot do it for you, do it for those who are watching. This is our next generation. Care for them the way you wish someone cared for you. I don't want them to talk to themselves the way most of us talk to ourselves. We cannot continue to put our emphasis on perfection and dictate all else as our failures. . As I worked this problem, each time I came off, I verbally recognized my struggle and how I was going to overcome it. "I didn't want to commit with the flag; I just need to do it" and "I was afraid to use that volume, but I can push through it," turning the challenge into reflection and learning opportunities. . Aside from the commitment required for moving off these itty bitty crimps, the hardness part of this problem, for me, was using the volumes without stepping on the other pieces on them. I definitely incidentally without intending to readjusted my foot in a nervous tick and pushed off a hold on the volume with the center of my foot at the top. . #girlswhoclimbrocks #climblikeagirl #ladycrushers #slaydies #sladies #climbing #climbstuffdotcom #climberlife #browngirlsclimb #womenwhorockclimb #womenwhoclimbrocks #tattooedpeopledoitbetter #climbing_is_my_passion #climbingcoach

This is a #throwback photo to refusing to let the rain ruin my Labor Day weekend at the #RedRiverGorge. It seriously rained every day we were there and I was determined on Monday to actually be able to climb something. It was just so damp, it required chalking up after making the starting move 🤦🏽‍♀️ . #browngirlsclimb #rrgcc #millerfork #climberlife #climbing_is_my_passion #climblikeagirl #ladycrushers #slaydies #sladies #climbing #climbstuffdotcom #girlswhoclimbrocks #womenwhorockclimb #womenwhoclimbrocks #thered #theadventuregap #adventuregap

#feminism is about empowering each other and lifting up, not tearing each other down. I am not here to compete with you. I am not here to be leverage. I want to raise up with you and be stronger together. . Aside from climbing and coaching, I am a Behavior Clinician. I identify, analyze, develop plans, and change behaviors for a living. . In order to make behavior change, you have to first start with something that is easily attainable and do it frequently. It has to feel like an easy thing to accomplish. It's reinforcing to accomplish something and this is no different. . Once you accomplish that, you step it up to a little more challenging now that you're already in routine. It cannot be too challenging that you don't stick with it, though. Smaller change is ideal, as it's more reinforcing and routine building. I build this into every training program and treatment plan I have ever made for anyone. . Example: In April of 2018, after almost 5 years of climbing, minus one year for graduate school, I was able to do my first pull-up after training it for one week. I should have started training it sooner. 🤦🏽‍♀️ One month ago, I put up a pull-up bar in the doorway to my bathroom and made the plan to do two pull-ups each time I exited the bathroom, even if I just walked in to brush my teeth or throw away trash. Two weeks later I went up to three pull-ups each time. Now I have changed the complexity and moved to two sets of three on non-climbing days and three each time on climbing days. . Change is within your reach if you start with easy obtainable, realistic goals. You're building muscle memory, routines, and mental endurance for all future training plans. What are you waiting for? . #browngirlsclimb #pullups #gettingstrong #wordsofwisdom #girlswhoclimbrocks #climblikeagirl #ladycrushers #slaydies #sladies #climbing #climbstuffdotcom #climberlife #trainingprograms #climbingcoach #climbing_is_my_passion #girlswhoclimbofficial #womenwhorockclimb #womenwhoclimbrocks #womenfitness #builditup

On #trainingtuesday I targeted big movements. I mainly worked a stemmy and technical V7 that required trusting myself being spread out repeatedly, but those aren't fun videos to watch. This problem was a big "I am not doing that" when I looked around for things to touch. It has big move after big move with some dynamic movement for funsies. It was the women's final for the comp over the weekend (I was out of town). I took a pretty gnarley fall on it, too, where I did a full spin before I landed. 🤦🏽‍♀️ . During one of the amazing clinics I took at #colorthecrag, @tayloredfitcoach talked about what big movements while climbing means for women, opening your body up in such a grand way being out of the norm. I am looking at it as a personal challenge/battle I haven't won yet but will continue to fight until the end of time. . #browngirlsclimb #girlswhoclimb #girlswhoclimbrocks #climblikeagirl #ladycrushers #slaydies #sladies #climbing #climbstuffdotcom #climberlife #girlswhoclimbofficial #climbing_is_my_passion #dyno #climbingdyno #womenwhoclimb #womenwhorockclimb #womenwhoclimbrocks #rockclimbingwomen #rockclimbinggirls #tattooedpeopledoitbetter #tattooedgirls #tattooed

My #womencrushwednesday #wcw goes out to these #ladycrushers from Sunday when we went out climbing at the #MadRiverGorge. It was the first time outside for two of these ladies and despite the below 40º weather, they killed it. . Thankfully @climbstuffdotcom allows you to not only purchase your gear at a reasonable price, but they also donate 5% of every order to #AccessFund groups of your choice.
