Impressive both inside and out, the Guadalajara Cathedral is home to various altars, as well as the remains of three cardinals and multiple bishops. Its draw is amplified by the fact that the cathedral houses the mummified remains of one little girl, known only as Santa Inocencia, or Saint Innocence.





Our hotel in Santo Domingo was located on Calle el Conde, a pedestrian-only street lined with shops selling artwork, jewelry, handicrafts and cigars. While I didn’t purchase anything on this trip, it was great to explore the variety of goods. Do you buy souvenirs when you travel?

Once the home of Diego Colón, Christopher Columbus’ son, this 16th century residence of the viceroy was the nucleus of the Spanish court for more than 60 years. The home overlooks the Plaza de España, a large open public space.


Completed in 1540, Basilica Cathedral of Santa Maria la Menor was the first cathedral in the New World. ⛪

Fortaleza Ozama is the oldest formal standing fort in the Americas. Built in 1502, the fort served the military interests of Spain, England, France, Haiti, Gran Colombia, the U.S. and, of course, the Dominican Republic until it was decommissioned and reopened for public use in 1970.
