Double Dee & Steinski - History Of Hip Hop (1985)
Originally released on Tommy Boy Records as Lessons 1, 2 & 3 ... I picked this bootleg copy up around 86/87.
These mixes were very difficult to get hold of at that time but I saw an advert for this 12” in the back of Black Echoes magazine and it had a London telephone number attached to it, so I phoned and arranged to pick up a copy for £20.
The whole thing was a bit dodgy really ... I meet this guy in a youth centre type of place around the Covent Garden area (I think?) I handed over the cash but there wasn’t a turntable in the place to check it ... I thought it was a bit of a scam cos £20 back then was a lot (probably around £50-£60 in today money) anyway he assured me it was genuine and I bought it on trust, thankfully it was what it said on the label.
Incidentally the label colour on this copy is a darker red than subsequent bootleg copies that surfaced years later, so that’s how you can distinguish it as the original 80’s bootleg pressing.
This was one of the greatest blind purchases I have ever made and all 3 tracks on this 12” were regularly played at The Defhouse.
