THE HOLIDAY CALENDAR
The continues with our third (and not final) Netflix Christmas film. This one is called, ‘The Holiday Calendar’ and it’s by far my favourite of the Netflix movies I’ve reviewed so far this year. It’s so good that honestly, my biggest problem with this movie is the name! ‘The Holiday Calendar’? Really? I get that you want to be inclusive but this title just literally makes no sense. There is no such thing as a ‘Holiday Calendar’. There could be no such thing as a holiday calendar unless there is a second holiday that is on the 25th of December that people count down to for 24 days. This movie should be called the advent calendar! Or maybe the Christmas calendar. In fact the characters in this movie call it an advent calendar! GAH! THE LUNACY! This point aside, the film is great. It actually subverts Christmas movie cliché’s by crafting a narrative that pokes fun at the lunacy of the usual overly romantic lead. This is done via two members of Hollywood royalty. The traditional overly romantic lead is played perfectly by Ethan Peck, who is actually Gregory Peck’s grandson (he’ll also be playing Spock next season on ‘Star Trek: Discovery’). The second, more genuine, and heartwarming lead is played by Quincy Brown, who is actually Puff ‘Sean Combs’ Daddy’s stepson. . Kat Graham is such a refreshing change in the lead role, as she plays someone who actually has career aspirations that she doesn’t abandon by the end of the film (is this a spoiler?). I really enjoyed this film. Though it didn’t necessarily rise to the the heights of a cinematic experience, I think it’s definitely in the upper echelon of made for TV/Netflix Christmas films. Check it out ASAP!
