This weekend I was pondering what it means to be trained as a therapist and specifically, a gestalt therapist... For me, learning and training in the Gestalt method added so much value and meaning to my life not only professionally, but personally as well. I honestly grew through that degree and I’ve continued to do so through my career. The gestalt philosophy has taught me present mindedness, it’s taught me the value of now. It is, after all, all that we have. It’s taught me to let go, to not expect to control things because that, in itself is a pointless exercise. It’s taught me that I am responsible for myself and my actions, but I cannot be responsible for that of others. It’s taught me authenticity and connection. It taught me to live life fully and joyfully. The quote below attached is written by Fritz Perls, the founder of Gestalt Therapy. I think it beautifully captures the meaning of the gestalt way and I think it’s something that is a valuable piece of advice for any relationship in life, parent and child, friendships, romantic relationship, work colleagues and even family relationships. I hope it adds some value and perspective to your day and that this short passage perhaps, even in a small way, made you see things a little differently. Have a wonderful Monday and week ahead.
