KORN - Take a Look in the Mirror
RIAA Certified Platinum.
Featuring "ALIVE", vocals written by Dennis Shinn. . . The story ---> Back in 1993 Jonathan Davis was asked to join a band called "CREEP", leaving our band we had together called "SexArt". I always supported JD throughout every step leading towards his transition from SexArt to become Korn.
During SexArt, I wrote all the vocals to 10 songs, minus 1 song written by Ryan Shuck titled "Another Day", and JD wrote vocals to 1 song titled "Waste My Time".
I mostly covered the writing duties because JD was a bit insecure about his writing at the time.
When he was transitioning to the new band titled "CREEP", JD asked me to help him with the writing of vocals aimed for this demo tape "Neidermeyers Mind" forging a new band called Korn.
They recorded 4 songs.
All 4 of the songs I had something to do with.
"Blind" I wrote entirely, music and vocals. JD also used vocals I wrote for "Daddy, Alive, & Predictable". This made up the 4 songs.
Blind and Daddy [original title FOLLOW ME] was already completed songs before Korn started.
But Korn made new music for "Daddy", and JD added a few things to the vocals once they re-created it.
During our last SexArt recording session in 1993, JD asked me to help him with this new demo tape he received by the band "CREEP".
5 minutes later sitting in Jonathan's car, together we created the vocals for "Predictable".
I wrote the vocals for "Alive" when JD went to grab food before our recording sesh.... Having that demo tape using a BoomBox, JD heard what I came up with, and loved it.
The song "Alive" was re-recorded 10 years later. It landed on "Take a Look in the Mirror". Conveniently, my name wasn't mentioned. Politics!!!
But the truth is the truth.
Where does all this sit with me now?
Despite the old drama, ego maniacs and their politics brought forth, I am always very proud of what I wrote, and thankful for Korn, doing such a great job representing the music for all these years..... ~Dennis Shinn
