My word for 2018 was Balance, and I definitely achieved a better work life balance this year. The first year of running your own business is always hectic, 70 hour weeks are all too common. Living and breathing your business is normal, and probably necessary if you want to succeed.
By the end of 2017 I was pretty tired but so proud of Hot Yoga Edinburgh and our team.
For 2018 I knew I wanted to create a better balance of work, family, friends and me. For the most part I managed. I cut back my teaching schedule. I have more time to work On, rather than In, my business. I spend more time at home and with friends. I visited my family in Canada for the first time in over 2 years.
Lately I’ve felt myself slipping back into a super-busy state. My to do list shows no sign of diminishing. I find myself rushing from one place to the next, with barely time to take a breath. Overall I love it, I love the variety of tasks each day, love checking things off my (never reducing) list, love solving problems and finding solutions. But at the same time I’m tired, my brain in a kind of frenzy of constant activity.
So today at lunchtime I decided to stop everything and treat myself to the Express Warm Yin taught by Heini. The gentle warmth in the studio was so inviting. She had lit candles which glowed alongside the fairy lights. The Yin sequence was slow and relaxing. I could feel layers of tension releasing as we moved from one pose to the next. The gentle heat warmed me to my bones. By the end of the practice I felt calm, my body warm and stretched. The following hour before my next meeting was my most productive of the whole day.
I’m so glad I found time in my schedule today for my Yin practice. It changed the feel of the whole day and left me feeling lighter and more focused than I have in a while. It was worth every minute.
I’m already thinking about my word for 2019... .
