Drawing Music. Day 16.
There has been a lot of talk about burn-out amongst those of us on the ground doing our best to stand alongside of the marginalized and victimized by the white supremacist policies of this country.
I have always been an activist, but never as close to the brutality and cruelty that I am witnessing now. It is hard not to want to say yes to everything and be everywhere, but I'm learning that it's my ego speaking when I struggle to say no.
The movement needs all of us doing what we do best so we can stay in this for the long haul, and it is a long haul.
Almost two weeks ago, Botham Jean was shot to death by a police officer in his own apartment. The cops did what they almost always do--they blamed the black man for being murdered by a white cop. This...is evil.
This week so many women are experiencing trauma because once again we see how we are considered, less than by those in power. The men who will decide our fate are willing to play off sexual assault as, "rough horse play." The mistakes of youth, they say. And, their goal is to take away more of our rights and dignity. The freedom of bodily autonomy. This...is evil.
Today, a woman, Gloria Hernandez, who has lived in this country since the 1980's, a woman with 5 children, grandchildren, and a husband who are all U.S. citzens was deported to Mexico. She was already stolen from her family--in detention. But in the dark of night ICE took her away without warning. Her family didn't even get to say goodbye. This...is evil.
Doing these drawings, writing, spending time with my family, music, working out, and knowing that wemake a difference, even though some days it doesn't feel that way, is what keeps me going.
Today was Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement a day to reflect.
What keeps you going?
Today's song is another one of those that makes me cry every time I hear it. The first words of, "What's Going On," inspired my drawing today as I see mother's say goodbye... "Mother, mother
There's too many of you crying"
