How am I gonna get a scar like that eating pussy?
Scarface wasn't understood, according to Pacino. It was more an underground movie. The critics didn't get the joke, because a lot of them were coming from another place. It was about success & avarice and everything being out of proportion. The character didn't try to explain himself. I like the fact that, to me, Tony Montana was two dimensional. I didn't want to make him a three dimensional character. What you see is what you get.
We didn't expect this terrible backlash in the first year (of its release), the first couple of years, actually, says Steven Bauer. The response from the Hollywood establishment was so, so negative that Al (Pacino) was really hurting, and De Palma too, Brian took it on the chin.
For years, Al & I couldn't even talk on the phone because it was such a sad subject. So it's just a nice turn of events that history has proven us right, has elevated (the movie) to a stature that is iconic.
