Today marks the beginning of a big step toward taking back my health. With the help of a #functionalmedicine doctor, I'm tackling my inflammation, and healing a #leakygut in pursuit of a whole body that doesn't just get me by, but helps me thrive. * * When I was diagnosed in 2015 with Celiac Disease, I was told to go gluten-free and the rest would follow. I'm sure many of you have heard similar recommendations. As the story goes, I saw improvements, but still didn't feel entirely well. Lots of googling, experimenting with diets, and two babies later, I've learned it's sooooo much more than being gluten-free. It's listening to your body, and letting go of the things that no longer serve you to make room for the things that do (regardless of what anyone else may think, because #youarethecommittee). It's remaining present in a body you'd much rather trade in for a working one, no matter how uncomfortable it is. It's finding joy and deep grattitude in the new experiences and people you meet along the way. For me, so much of that has circled back to food, and was the reason for starting this Instagram account. I've learned so much from this community already, and I know it's only just begun. * * So, that was a very long intro to share with you why I'm beginning my day with #soupforbreakfast (recipe courtesy of @autoimmunepaleo and wow, it's delightful). It's one of the many changes I'll be making to care for myself, and better give of myself to the people I love. My mushroom re-intro did not go well so repairing the damage with lots of garlic and ginger bone broth. I'd heard somewhere mushrooms could cause issues but it isn't mentioned in the GAPS book. I had a severe reaction - all classic candida symptoms - brain fog, tired, weak etc. Who'd have thought it. Has anyone else had issue with mushrooms in particular? I think I've been completely digestive symptom free for so long that it was a bit of a shock. How on earth did I used to live like that? It's amazing what can gradually become normal over time. Breakfast today. I have been traveling for most of the last 10 days for work and pleasure and haven’t been perfectly on my program. I lost it the last 24 hours or so. 2016 I was up a few pounds due to the move to Germany. Our gym was not as good, the weather is always gray and rainy, I didn't have a support and I was literally driving all over town taking my daughter to Speech and OT. Though I was lean, I was feeling worn out. Tired, fatigued and just not myself. The weight was slowly coming on. 1 lb here then 2 then 5 and suddenly 12 in 3 months. It was my call to action to get find out what was going on and why my body was not responding.

Since I'm on AIP this also means more avocado, olive and coconut oil, healthy bone broth and animal fats. . But let's put aside all the conversations about how fat is good for you (WHO close your ears, please!), and talk about multitasking (you'll understand what I mean). . I am a multitasking and GTD girl. Seeing the result I expect gives me a great amount of satisfaction (thank you, dopamine! I like you, too). But as we stop for a second and evaluate the work we did and the outcome we got, many times (in case you are honest enough to yourself) you'll see that you could have done better not because you are so ineffective, but because there was too much on your radar in the first place. Most importantly - chances you feel exhausted by the finish are very high. . Living with autoimmune decease is not easy. Some of you just get into a whole new world of healthy nutrition, functional approach to curing patients, the right good quality supplementation, different opinions and clues on why you experience what you experience - all of this at once can be emotionally overwhelming and doesn't contribute to your individual process of healing. You may be tempted to try as many things as possible in order to get relief from pain or other debilitating symptoms. Don't. Don't participate in this marathon, don't compete with other people's results. The optimal sub-tasking in your personal rhythm WILL bring the best results, not just expected ones. This is the biggest lesson I learned. . No matter how Yoda-ish this may sound - through this problem you understand how your body works and what you REALLY can do to heal completely, not just for a short period of time.

In 2011 I gave birth to my 3rd child. Wanting to lose the baby weight I joined a transformation challenge with my husband with the sole purpose of losing the weight. This was the first time I ever lifted weights. I started losing weight and eventually got the leanest I have EVER been in my life, but I went about it the wrong way. I had extreme food restrictions, I was exercising 2x a day for more than an hour each time. I was exhausted and spinning my wheels. Then I got pregnant with #4 and suddenly everything I did before did not work. I ended up restricting calories EVEN more and worked out even harder and finally dropped the weight. What I didn't realize was how much damage I was doing to my body and metabolism. And let me be honest, my metabolism is not the strongest since I have struggled with Hashimotos Hypothyroid since 12 years old. I finally lost the weight and then WE MOVED TO EUROPE. Cue all the CARBS, CHOCOLATAE and CAPPUCCINOS and immediately I gained weight. Only this time I started struggling with sugar swings, upset stomach, skin issues and my thyroid was out of control. That set me on a mission to live my life healthy but balanced. I have been working with Nautropath to help my adrenals and thyroid and working with trainer on reverse dieting. Food restriction and unhealthy eating habits have created a monster and its time to find the balance.

The idea of food as medicine seems so empowering but it's easy to fall into a fear of "bad" food. With diets like paleo, AIP, Fodmap and whole30 the focus is on whole, real foods, properly prepared and in the right proportions. Sounds great...but it's important to acknowledge what it takes: A lot more home cooking, a lot less easy go to foods, a lot less trust in eating out or at friends and families houses and in food in general. The benefits are real and worthwhile but the costs are there. After recently falling pregnant I found myself eating far less than my body required because I didn't want to eat "bad" food but didn't have the energy to do all the work of getting myself "good" food. I'm back on track now and truly enjoying the middle ground I've found for myself - a balance between quality food and convenience. This rainbow salad pictured is easy enough if you have a food processor and stores well in the fridge. Julienne carrots, apples, beetroot and mix with finely grated ginger, AVC and olive oil. Just add whatever extras you fancy per serve. Today is feta, pumpkin seeds and hazelnuts for me. Two serves...

So my diet this week is pretty much chicken, bone broth, dandelion greens, celery and green beans, and repeat. But mix in a little lime and cilantro with some extra virgin olive oil, a huge dose of Himalayan sea salt all on doctor’s orders 😂and it’s all freaking delicious...so I’m not complaining. Plus, the meal prep is pretty with all the vibrant green. I’m feeling pretty good but I’m cautiously optimistic, at some point this week I’m going to want a latte and dark chocolate, so you know reality. It’s Monday night and I’m continuing the meal prep I started Sunday afternoon, with sweet potato 🍠 hash. I’ve been enjoying sweet potato hash with avocado 🥑 and either bacon or some other protein as my go-to AIP breakfast (I miss eggs though!) This is day 8 and the second week of my AIP journey. Previously I’ve tried Paleo, Keto, and completed the Whole 30. I have to say now that I’m a week in, that AIP is definitely more restricting and difficult than the diets I listed above. The first 3 days were the worst, I suffered with cravings, headaches, and overall just feeling cruddy. Motherhood is wayyy more time consuming than I’d expected. When the little birdie isn’t eating, she staying snuggled in my arms, or fussing until I scoop her back up into my arms. So much for productivity! . Also, I now understand how breastfeeding moms have such a hard time feeding themselves. I generally don’t get a chance to brush my teeth and eat breakfast until noon, and even then it needs to be a fork-free, one handed meal. Which means I’m pretty much subsisting on GF toast with sunbutter, ghee, honey, and banana every dang day. Which is fine, but this mama would prefer to transition back to her version of AIP (which does not include processed grains or seeds). . Why am I not pressuring myself to get back to that particular diet right away? . Because stress can work against you more than a healing diet can work for you. . As I’m recovering from surgery, working through sleep deprivation, and dealing with postpartum hormone fluctuations, the last thing I need to worry about is a strict dietary change. . All that to say, today I finally meal planned and made a grocery list. Hello casseroles, soups, and smoothies! How someone as uncoordinated as me will eat a bowl of soup while breastfeeding has yet to be determined. Somehow, I’ll manage. (⬅️The Office reference) . It’s a mussels-kind-of-Monday and I need a seafood fix! Recipe as follows, direct link is in my bio for printing or pinning 💕 🍴 🛒 1.5 lbs mussels, beards 🧙🏼‍♂️removed 🛒 2 tbsp pastured butter 🛒 1/2 c dry white wine 🛒 2 whole shallots, minced 🛒 2 whole garlic cloves, minced 🛒 1 handful Italian parsley, stems removed 🌱 🛒 Maldon salt flakes to season ✨ Heat a large pot (I prefer cast iron) over medium high heat with butter. Add shallots and garlic. Once golden brown, add mussels with wine and put a lid on it (!) Cook for 3-5 minutes, depending on your stove, until mussels have opened. It may need a minute or two longer, but don’t over cook 💕. Today’s very late “breakfast” is plain and simple: grass-fed ground beef, organic broccoli sautéed in coconut oil, and previously roasted sweet potato sliced and sautéed in yet more coconut oil. . What goes on behind the scenes... Autoimmune uticaria😏 when my body thinks the cold is a foreign invader and needs to release histamine🙄 Sounds crazy, but I get horrible rashes if I am exposed to cold temperatures for too long👎🏼 - I never had this until a few years ago & It’s quite annoying. If I don’t get warm quickly it will literally spread to my entire body.... & it’s horribly itchy😫 So after my little snow-shoot, I hopped in our sauna & applied Frankincense to my entire body to calm the rash down and get my skin warmed up🔥 - As long as I listen to my body & don’t let it get out of hand it goes away pretty quickly, thank God🙌🏼 But reactions like that take a lot out of me... & remind me why I’m on this health journey. Because I’m not where I want to be just yet❤️ With the help & encouragement of my sweet & gorgeous genius @doniwhitfield I’m going to get my inflammation under control with a reset, supplements, & the autoimmune protocol diet (AIP)🤓 Praying this works🙏🏼🙌🏼

These cold days demand soup! Today, I made a chicken sausage and pulled chicken “gumbo” over cauliflower rice. The roux, which I didn’t get nearly dark enough, was a mix of almond, coconut and tapioca flower. Good, but tinkering will continue. Stay warm!
