Staying cool! A Burchell's zebra’s stripy coat is thought to disperse more than 70 per cent of incoming heat, preventing the animal from overheating in the South African sun. The elegant stripes are also known to help camouflage the animal in long grass, and distract lions and other predators. Recent research also shows that a zebra's stripes may have evolved to keep biting insects at bay - the monochrome pattern seems to throw off the visual systems of flies. On top of this, a zebra's stripes act like a fingerprint - each individual’s pattern is unique. Foals recognise their mothers by the pattern of their stripes, as well as by scent and call. The Burchell's Zebra in Thanda, South Africa is the most common across the African continent and has been classified into seven sub-species across its range. One of the coolest designs in nature! #mattiasklum #zebra #plainzebra #science #naturalairconditioning #southafrica #thanda #africa #nikonambassadors #protectbiodiversity #artistduoalexandrovklum #alexandrovklum @natgeo @thephotosociety @irisalexandrov @alexandrovklumofficial @mattiasklumcollection

For many years (33 to be specific) I have mostly focused on capturing endangered species, cultures and eco systems in remote, far flung places, like when shooting a Kinkajou story 2003 in Panama for @natgeo (hanging from a climbing rope up the rainforest canopy for weeks). A few days ago I turned 50. Time truly flies... but I am now, more than ever, commited to use my art and storytelling to try to inspire positive change, but these days together with @irisalexandrov for @alexandrovklumofficial. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all crew members, friends and followers in the world for your loyal, kind and constructive support and love!! El cielo desde África, 1/3 de este continente se encuentra en el Hemisferio Sur y cuando ves el centro de la vía láctea cerca del zénit, es que estás en el Sur✨ el cielo el patrimonio sin contaminación lumínica. #darksky #lightpollution free #NocheZero inspiration from @mattiasklumofficial using @RepostRegramApp - I took this picture of The Milky Way Galaxy from the Makgadikgadi Pan, a salt pan situated in the middle of the dry savanna of north-eastern Botswana. The Milky way is really our home galaxy in the universe. The centre of it, which is located about 26,000 light-years from Earth, contains at least one supermassive black hole. The Milky Way began forming around 12 billion years ago! Makgadikgadi Pan is one of the largest salt flats in the world. The pan is all that remains of the formerly enormous Lake Makgadikgadi, which once covered an area larger than Switzerland, but dried up several thousand years ago. To stay over night out in this arid wilderness listening to lions and brown hyenas in a distance is nothing but spectacular! Makgadikgadi And the Milky way, magnificent and extraordinary to watch every time!! Dusky afternoon landscape close to our home in Uppsala, Sweden. I truly adore this season- wet, foggy and gray. That is, aesthetically. This season is like a long wait- for snow, for spring, for the rest of 2018. A good time to consolidate and rest. #livingthelife #artistduo #uppsala #sweden #hello2018 #meditation #yoga #coldandwet @mattiasklumofficial @alexandrovklumofficial #alexandrovklum

Photo by @mattiasklumofficial Bats circling the Deer cave entrance in The Gunung Mulu National Park, Sarawak, Malaysia. This National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that encompasses incredible caves and karst formations in Borneo’s mountainous equatorial rainforest setting. Please go to @mattiasklumofficial to meet a charming giant panda that I photographed in Foping Nature Reserve, China. At least 12 species of bat have been recorded here. Deer Cave that is located in the southern limestone hills of the park is home to an enormous colony of Wrinkle-lipped bats estimated to number between 2.5 and 3.5 million individuals. The bats exit the cave almost every evening in search of food. A huge mound of guano in the cave is evidence of the size of the bat colony that roosts in the cave's high ceilings. #mattiasklum #sarawak #gunungmulu #alexandrovklum #protectbiodiversity #bats #deercave #malaysia #borneo #savetherainforest @thephotosociety @natgeotravel @irisalexandrov @alexandrovklumofficial @mattiasklumcollection @natgeo - #regrann

Quite some time ago it was summer. We were walking barefoot by the stream and came home in a light night when we sat by the piano writing songs about love and loss. Another memory. #singersongwriter #likeadream #memorylane #etherial #humannature #love #music #alexandrovklum @irisalexandrov @mattiasklumofficial
