ARTISTS IN THE SPOTLIGHT
CLIVE AND JENNY KENDRICK
Clive and Jenny will be exhibiting their work for the third year in the Southern Art and Craft Trail.
They have been exhibiting their work and winning many prizes over the past 10 years, including first prize in the collaboration section of the 2017 Out of the Woods competition in Claremont, and both the collaboration section and the woodturning section of the 2018 Easter exhibition of the Woodturners of Denmark (WA). Clive retired from school teaching in 1995 and took up woodturning as a hobby. Studying with master craftsman Dean Malcolm, he soon began displaying his work in galleries in Perth, the south of WA and Bungendore in NSW.
Clive uses a wide variety of different timbers: Sheoak, Jarrah, Marri, Manna Gum, Jacarandah, Huon Pine, various burls to create his range of turned pieces including platters, hollow forms, spheres, boxes and lamps.
Jenny has had a long association with art. She studied art in secondary school graduating with distinction. Art was also an important component in all of her teaching at primary school.
Once Jenny also retired from teaching, their collaboration became a full-time operation. She became involved by adding artistic embellishments to many of Clive’s creations with her own artistic skill using complex and sophisticated pyrography, piercing, carving and painting.
Since retirement, she has begun to develop her own passion for graphic-style drawing with pencil, water colour and ink, focussing upon the beauty of the natural environment and the southwest tall timber country where she and her husband, Clive, now live.
They were both inspired by the variety of bark which had fallen from the trees and which they observed closely on morning walks. They decided to name their exhibition Beneath the Bark and this theme has inspired some of Jenny’s embellishments as well as her 2D art work.
Their work can be seen at Aspects Gallery in Kings Park, in Dean Malcolm’s Gallery, Young Siding, Woodworks, Albany, and Petrichor Gallery, Walpole.
