On 9/11 I was waiting at a friends house in NJ to find out if family members that worked in NY were safe. There were kittens in the back yard. They were this perfect example of pure fluffy love on such a terrible day. Wanting to counter the trauma and evil taking place, I held one of those sweet things all night and took her home.
Lately I’ve been internalizing all the bad things going on in our country and the world around us. I tend to do that which is why I put my head in the sand for a long time. But it is so bad now that I had to start paying attention again because we can’t provoke change if we aren’t aware. The better informed we are the better our chances of actually making a difference. In the process of gaining information I’ve come across the amount of hate that exists around us and it is like its being unleashed without any restraint. The comments I read from people yelling “DIE!” and “KILL THEM ALL” then laughing about it towards an entire race of people or religion or even just a political party that’s different than theirs makes me want to cry. How is this ok? How can people justify that kind of evil not only in their hearts but to not be ashamed to scream it out in a public forum. We cannot let this become normal. The consequences are enormous when hate is encouraged and not shamed.
So in the midst of this I got 11 baby silkie chickens. They are small and fragile, sweet, docile and fluffy. They are my reminder of pure and simple love. Jesus fought hate with love and while in the moment or short term it may not seem to have the effect we are looking for...it is the best way to fight it in the long run. Hate and love are both contagious, and the one you feed is the one that prevails.
In a world of hate, be the fluffy chicken.
