There are so many urban legends circulating around this work. Luis' inspiration for the work is a powerful commentary on the future of America's wild horses. They once were plentiful on the land where DEN sits now. Luis selected this location very intentionally, and intended it to be a provocative and thought provocing icon to the history of the great American West.
Plus, the lyrics to "America the Beautiful" written by Katherine Lee Bates in, on Pike Peak (1895) in Colorado Springs, (Music score by Samuel A. Ward in New Jersey), and Luis Jimenez intentionally oriented the lone Mustang looking towards Pikes Peak as a symbol to wild mustangs which are an integral part of our culture and whose populations are being reduced.
