“A land without ruins is a land without memories, a land without memories is a land without history” The Katas Raj Temples, also known as Qila Katas. The temples form a complex surrounding a pond named Katas (tears) which is regarded as sacred by Hindus. This is located in Potohar Plateau region of Pakistan's Punjab province and was built back in 7th century C.E. ~wiki~ #katasraj #punjab #pakistan #ancientruins

Gorgeous, and ridiculously impressive, Library of Celsus, one of the largest libraries of the ancient world. Visible from almost anywhere in Ephesus, it is understandably the busiest and most chaotic part of the historical site. To admire all the beauty of ancient city , you have to walk Ephesus twice, however in the summery midday heat this is not a gentle stroll🤯 Best time to visit this fascinating site is autumn or spring. . . . . . #ephesus #ephesusturkey #ancientruins #ancientsite #ancientsitesinturkey #mysteriousturkey #turkey #romancity #ancienthistory #archeology #gktravelblog #ancientdestinations #travel #travelblogger #traveltheworldtogether #globetrotter #libraryofcelsus

Skull Platform and El Castillo at Chichen Itza. These Mayan ruins were once the site of a large and diverse multicultural city in Mesoamerica, built over 1000 years ago before New York or LA even existed. 2.6 million tourists visit this place every year and you can see why -- it's an amazing place in a beautiful country and has earned its spot as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World ✔🇲🇽 _______________________________________________ #mexico #yucatan #chichenitza #maya #ruinasmayas #pyramid #skullplatform #elcastillo #templeofkukulkan #ancientruins #itza #mexico_amazing #mexico_fotos #travel #instatravel #goexplore #wonderfulplaces #doyoutravel #wanderlust #adventureseeker #openmyworld #wondersoftheworld #basic

Here some of last week's production ☺️ with ancient artefacts, illustrated for My wonderful World kids travel journal in watercolours and ink. This series of illustrations are quite simpler and looser in their style comparing to my usual illustrations. . . . As you may know, I´m working on a children’s book project for Kids Exploring called My Wonderful World which is a complete travel journal for kids. It will include more than 250 small illustrations, painted maps, all the flags from countries around the world and doodles done by me. . . . . #Bookstagram #travelkids #kidstravel #bookfair #instaread #outdoorkids #diary #kidsdiary #childrensbooks #bookcover #childrensbookcover #bookdesign #childrensbookillustrator #illustrator #mariannescheel #watercolor #theydrawandtravel #theydrawandcook #ancienthistory #ancientruins #ruins

A closer look at one of the broken pieces of the column. The Greeks were Master Architects who laid down the three Classical orders of Architecture which the later generations would follow. The columns were made up of three basic parts. The base, The Shaft which formed the longest portion of the column and the Capital which rested on the shaft and gave a distinct character to the columnal structure. From the total five orders, the Greeks have been responsible for the three classical orders and later the two were added by the Romans. The first one was the simple and stylish Doric Order which consisted of circular rings going all round the top of the shaft which formed the capital of the column. This was then modified to pave way for the second iconic order which consisted of an inverted scroll like pattern on the capital of the column placed at the top of the shaft. If you might have seen closely all the pillars of the Oval plaza were of the Iconic order with the scroll like pattern on the top. The Third and the last of the classical orders was the Corinthian which was a more ornate and decorated of all the three orders. This was named after the ancient city of Greece called the Corinth. They used intricate carvings of the Acanthus leaves in the Capital of the columns to make it more artistic. The Acanthus is a perennial tree growing in the Mediterranean Region. The above image shows a classic example of a broken Capital of a column belonging to the Classical Corinthian order. The shafts of all these columns in their respective orders were either plain and smooth or fluted in design. During the Renaissance era, all these orders were revived again and two more orders were added by the Romans which came to be known as the Tuscan and the Composite Orders. The Tuscan order was the Improved version of the Doric order and The Composite Order was a more decorated, ornamental and a mixed version of the Iconic and Corinthian Order where the inverted scroll like pattern and the Acanthus leaf patterns were combined in a single design in the Capital of a column. These are all of the five orders of Architecture laid down by the Greeks and the Romans. © Madhavi Jarmarwala

If only I can have a bathroom that grand...🥰 🧜‍♀️🏊‍♀️ This grand Indo-Islamic structure is known as 'Queen's Bath' and was constructed during the reign of the Vijayanagara Empire for the purpose of the bath for royal ladies. 🏊‍♀️🏊‍♀️ From outside it looks like a plain rectangular structure, rather ugly. From the inside, however, it showcases exquisitely carved windows, protruding over the pool and dome-shaped verandahs with intricate carvings and carefully designed aqueducts. 💦💙 Area-wise, this sunken bath is said to be 50ft wide and 6ft deep. 💙 Two striking things are there about this structure - A broad ditch surrounding the structure that you'd need to jump over to enter the building, and the remoteness of the bath from other royal enclosures. 💜💜 The ditch is believed to be for keeping the intruders away while the bath was in use and the bath's remoteness is..well..for the obvious purpose of providing privacy; Queen's bath was not just for the royal ladies but also for the kings, and for their mutual pleasure (over to your imagination). 💝💕👯‍♀️ #hampidiaries #unescoworldheritagesite

Under a Zimbabwe Sun - Dzimbahwe ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Part 3 of the 10th triptych of images from Zimbabwe 🇿🇼. .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The great Zimbabwe site consists of 3 distinct areas: the Hill Complex, the Great Enclosure and the Valley Ruins. The Great Enclosure is the most iconic and featured on the now defunct 50 dollar bank note. . One of the most impressive, and imposing, parts of the Great Enclosure is the Parallel Passage. The passage is 55m long and is formed by a pair of parallel curving walls 11 metres high and so close together that it is only possible to walk in single file. The passage leads directly to the Conical Tower (featured in the previous triptych). . Whilst the Great Enclosure as a whole and this particular feature would appear to form an effective defensive role, it is generally agreed that this was not its primary purpose. Its function is not certain but a common theory is that it served as a Royal Palace. Its name in the dialect of the people who lived there was Imbahuru, meaning “the house of the great woman” or “the great house”. This theory, paired with the obvious phallic nature of the huge Conical Tower, and the fact that the Parallel Passage leads from the Northern Entrance (probably the main entrance) directly to the Conical Tower, makes for interesting contemplation!

Remember the post a few back looking down those STEEP steps in Ek'Balam- the ancient mayan ruins? (If not, go check it out!!) This is the view from the top- right across the jungle over the rest of the site. You can see how much taller the kings palace is compared to the other buildings around him- all his citizens had to look up to his level. Even with a few people around, it had an incredibly peaceful atmosphere- we loved it. . . . . #mayanruins #ekbalam #ancientruins #visityucatan #igersyucatan #yucatanmexico #yucatán #yucatanturismo #mayaruins #withintheruins #ancientcity #ancienthistory #ancientarchitecture #iamtb #gltlove #wonderfuldestinations #wonderful_earthpix #adventureinspired #travelerslife #lonelyplanettraveller #travelbloggerlife #adventureseekers #travelinstagram #igtraveller #awesomeexperience #whereitravel #speechlessplaces #girlaroundtheworld #instatravellers
