I’ve already discussed most of what makes Devilman Crybaby so great but I only briefly touched on the best part about it, it’s ability to modernise the classic manga which it is based on so effectively. First of all, the character designs in Crybaby tend to follow the same colour schemes as their manga counterparts, but their actual appearance is completely different. When looking back at the manga, the character designs are very dated and the decision to completely change them up for Crybaby was a great one. The next and possibly most important things is the character’s hobbies. In the manga, the now famous rappers from Crybaby are replaced with the most generic high school thugs imaginable. The thugs from the manga very much reflect the time in which it was written, when it was cool to be a delinquent. The decision to give the delinquents in Crybaby a hobby like rapping was a very smart one and modernised the characters tremendously. They also got a lot more screen time in Crybaby which made their fate a lot more impactful. As for Miki, in the manga she was just a generic anime girl who served as a love interest from Akira. In Crybaby she is given a lot more screen time through the use of her hobby, running. Miki’s hobby being running not only gives her character more depth but also has an impact on the final battle of the series, the passing the baton metaphor is executed brilliantly and is only possible because of Miki’s hobby. The modernised hobbies of the Crybaby characters serve to modernise the manga excellently. Lastly, of course I have to talk about the soundtrack. The Crybaby soundtrack is excellent and gives the show its own identity. The soundtrack for the old devilman anime hasn’t aged well and Crybaby even went as far as to remake one of the most famous songs from the original. The modern soundtrack helps keep things fresh and is just overall one of the best in anime. Overall, through the use of, character designs, character hobbies and the soundtrack, the classic Go Nagai manga was modernised excellently. Creating one of my favourite anime of all time.
