💉💊 I spent the entire morning “going to school” on YouTube and feel like I’m slowly earning an unofficial health degree 🤓 (Of course there’s probably a fair bit of misinformation on there, but there’s a ton of great legit teaching too from experts I trust, as well as personal accounts from people who’ve traveled this frustrating cystic acne road before me that help a lot as well.)
I don’t take prescriptions lightly. I want to understand the science of why it’s being prescribed, why it should work, etc. Same is true of the supplements I’m starting.
I went back to the dermatologist yesterday with the intention of having more cortisone shots, especially for the worst spot I currently have going on (which, granted, had been improving since I made the appointment a couple days prior). Last visit (my first at this practice and since moving this past summer) I didn’t remove any of my makeup prior to receiving the cortisone shots in the areas that needed them. THIS time I wanted to show the derm what I’m really dealing with in terms of redness, inflammation, etc., just really show up with all my issues, no camouflage. I could tell right away that this caused him to even more carefully consider my treatment plan. It’s a sight, I tell ya 👀 So the redness and overall inflammation became a more primary concern that the individual trouble spots I have going on. He recommended an antibiotic again (which I still declined), and also a short 5-day course of prednisone (a synthetic form of the hormone cortisol).
The way he explained it to me, this low dose course would calm the inflammation I’m experiencing and give my skin a chance to begin healing. He said they sometimes prescribe it for people who are on accutane if they experience particularly bad acne flares, and that I shouldn’t have to deal with any of the side effects people who are on prednisone long term sometimes experience (most noticeably swelling/puffing up all over, which I asked about).
