Paul and Ethel Hultberg playing on a Mark di Suvero #sculpture situated at the Gate Hill Cooperative. .
Paul Hultberg and his family moved in 1956 from Brooklyn to an artist community in Stony Point, New York. The Gate Hill Coop, also known as "The Land" was made up of #artisans #musicians #filmmakers #poets #composers #peaceniks and #antiwar protestors. The community was founded by #architect Paul Williams who also designed the #midcenturymodern homes that were built on the property, influenced by the #moderndesign concepts of Bauhaus. Our family built the second home on the upper square of the 116 acre wooded property and lived there for a little over a decade. Paul Williams had financially supported Black Mountain College toward the end of its run and some of the #luminaries hailing from the college moved to the Gate Hill community and thereabouts to be closer to New York City, the epicenter of the burgeoning art scene that would later be dubbed the, New York School. #newyorkschool .
"The New York School was an informal group of American poets, painters, dancers, and musicians active in the 1950s and 1960s in New York City. They often drew inspiration from surrealism and the contemporary avant-garde art movements, in particular action painting, abstract expressionism, jazz, improvisational theater, experimental music, and the interaction of friends in the New York City art world's vanguard circle." [Wikipedia]
The New York School included all sorts of culturally creative folk, and my parents were in the thick of it, and good friends with many of those who have since become celebrated household names in the #artworld .
Among them was #abstractexpressionist #sculptor Mark di Suvero #markdisuvero who had built several #kineticsculpture for us kids to play on. The one pictured in this photo was typically a favorite among us, and we spent many hours spinning each other around on it. The #sculptures have since be removed and are likely in some #museum or another. .
