(5/?) Quinn and Joya arrived late to their brother’s ceremony. The car pulled up to a lone tent, its sides flapping slightly in the midday breeze, that stood in stark contrast to the flat emptiness of the barrens around it. The lodge, where only corporate employees were allowed, was visible in the distance on a slight hill overlooking the barrens.
They stepped out of the car and brushed themselves off one final time, to varying degrees of success.
“Redge won’t be happy,” said Joya.
“He’s being initiated today,” said Quin. “It’s all he’s wanted since he was little and found out that it meant he’d be in charge of the entire clan,” said Quin, “Us being late is the last thing he will remember about today.”
They walked into the tent, Joya in her slightly wrinkled dress, and Quinn in her filthy, sweaty armor, trying their best to make as little noise as possible. Quin’s father stood speaking at a podium on a slightly raised platform at the front of the tent, facing an audience of about one hundred people, mostly men, mostly elders of the clan. As the two girls entered her father stopped midsentence and looked at them causing the entire audience to turn and look at them as well. ”Quin, Joya, so happy you made it here. Now I can finally conclude my speech.”
A smattering of awkward laughter arose from the crowd. Redge was seated to their father’s right with a smirk on his face. His sisters both slunk into seats in the row nearest the entrance, furthest the platform at front. The audience turned back to face her father as he began to speak again.
”And, so, after very careful thought and deliberation, I realized there was only one person fit to be my successor. Although I know some may disagree,” he looked Quin square in the eyes. ”there is no doubt in my mind that Quin Hanagau will replace me at the conclusion of today’s initiation ceremony.”
