Meet Barry O’ Duffy from Ireland. He’d lost his way around Canal Saint Martin looking for a post office so I was of some google maps help. We got to talking about travel, Kashmir, Paris, art and food since he’s here on holiday too, just because he loves the city.
Me- “So what do you like most about Paris?”
Barry- “Oh, the food and the drink! I’m no fussy eater but the french really know what they’re doing!”
He recommended a few places I hadn’t heard of. Even told me about a street with an age old shop of old coins! “I have a few really old ones you know, back in Dublin. A gold coin from a Russian Czar. Isn’t that fascinating?”
He then asked me who my favourite artists were, I said I didn’t know much about art but I seemed to like the impressionists the most. Monet was my favourite.
“Oh, he’s my favourite too! I don’t understand Picasso much. I don’t like his paintings at all actually! They’re all confusing and ugly. An eye at the bottom, a liver at the top. All mixed up. Barmy old man he was, Picasso! I do like Renoir. He was good for the faces. Life is too short to look at ugly paintings!”
Haha, he seemed so pissed off with Picasso and his paintings.😂 Told me of a few easy-to-miss but interesting museums in the neighbourhood. Some interesting facts about Van Gogh I had no idea about.
“Can I take a picture of you, Barry?”
“You can, but your camera might break!”
Oh, the people you meet and the wonderful things they have to talk about.🙂
