I used to hate unexpected days. I used to want everything planned out - when it came to holidays especially, but even when I first arrived here I’d want to know more or less where I was going to be and when, and have a place to park already decided before the day began.
But now... now I’m finding that the best kinds of days are those unexpected days. We’ve had a few of them lately. Like the hike with White Dog a week or two ago. And today, getting a message from a Slovenian trainer that we’re doing our online running class with, asking if I wanted to come to her seminar, that we would start earlier to squeeze me in. I’d wanted to train with her before we came to Slovenia but both our schedules didn’t seem to match. She was in Germany, I was in Slovenia. She was in Slovenia, i was in croatia. And so it went. I’d given up. But then getting this message this morning, sitting 2.5 hours from Ljubljana. ‘When would we start?’ I asked, eyeing the clock warily. ‘12.30’. ‘Plenty of time!’ I replied. Then consulted google maps. I would have to leave in 15 minutes and drive hard for the 2.5 hours. I was still in my pyjamas (yeah yeah I know), breakfast dishes unwashed, I still had to check out and pay and pack up the van.
20 minutes later we were on the road. I put all the skills I’d learnt driving windy roads in Italy to the test and we got there only ten minutes late and before some of the other participants. We had a great session, I really got a lot out of it, and we even did some running contacts at the end and Loki was brilliant on a new setup.
Then, I opened my Park4Night app, found a place that sounded reasonable and went there to see what it was like. And it’s my FAVOURITE kind of place. Off the road, surrounded by grass and trees and right on the river Sava. There’s not a soul around, Loki had a swim to clean the pond-stink off of him, and now we will settle in for the night. Tired, relaxed and contented after such an unexpected day. (This photo has nothing to do with the day but I’ve been waiting for a reason to post it so it’ll work for now!)
