July #foodforest check-in! Including discovering the latest & greatest "secret nest" the birds have been crafting 😂
My #backyardchickens and #backyardducks (well, now down to duck singular) freaking love it. People ask me how it works without the birds destroying my plants, and I have 2 main tips for that: 1.) Wait until the majority of your perennial plants are waist height or taller to free range chickens & ducks in your garden! Protect new additions with small DIY cages made of scrap fencing.
2.) The ratio of birds to plants needs to be many more plants than birds for success. I have maybe 90 plants I've seeded or planted just in the back food forest area you can see, and this keeps so much interest around that the birds are unlikely to go for, say, your kale - because there are a million other plants and bugs to go for instead!
3.) Create interesting, seasonally shifting microclimates for them with compost piles, mulch accumulating pathways, cover cropping, brush piles, bird baths, rock piles, dust baths, and the like. This keeps them busy, happy, and out of your food crops!
4.) Make food crops less accessible with raised beds, low fencing, etc. With easier options close at hand, they're unlikely to expend the extra effort to get at your favorite crops! 💚
Let me know if you want to know more about any of these #backyardpoultry tips! I love my girls and wouldn't change having them around for anything. They teach me so much daily and I love sharing that with you guys! 💚
