🚨 PERIPHERAL VISION IS KEY 🚨
-Catchers are taught to get their chin down when blocking to keep their trachea from being crushed, but they don’t realize the hockey mask is made to protect the neck..the chin has to be down to where the mask touches the chest protector (not where they expose the top of their head, can’t see anything, and their chest is no longer exposed to block the ball). This helps keep good posture and most importantly a really good catcher can block the ball and use his/her peripheral vision to see the runner going before the fielders tell him!
My buddy Nate getting the basics down last week! After a block, have your catcher hold, and without moving their head, they should be able to tell you how many fingers you’re holding up by your hip.
