Bees play a huge role in pollinating the fruits and vegetables that we so love to eat (and grow!).
Humans have kept bees for this and to harvest honey since time immemorial. But today, the quality of honey has been totally compromised. It has heavy metals, antibiotics, residues of insecticides and pesticides, is adulterated with sugar solution and generally lacks enzymes and minerals. At the same time, as 'high performing' bee varieties are preferred by professional bee keepers, Apis Cerana – the Eastern honey bee – is in decline. To improve the environment for bees and create a relationship of harmony between bees and human beings, there is an immediate need to create a better understanding of these wonderful insects. Rakesh Gupta from the Golden Hive Foundation will talk about the importance of the Apis Cerana bee in this interactive workshop. He will bring bees for this session, which will allow all participants to interact with the sweet bees - and of course some interesting unifloral varieties of honey for your taste buds!
It will be a co-created hands-on learning experience covering:
1. Introduction to Honey bees .
2. Social structure - queen, workers, drones
3. Life cycle
4. Apis cerana and Mellifera species
5. Strengths and weaknesses
6. Pollination possibilities
7. Interesting FAQs
. Crystallisation of honey
. Compromises in honey
. Source specific uni- floral honey
. Bee box migration - is it needed and why
and much more.
8. Need for conservative And bee banks
9. Basics of bee management- home scale vs business
10. Bee products- what is sustainable and what is not- honey, propylis, queen jelly, comb honey.. •
