As I sit here at the hospital at 2am, I often reflect on why I chose this career. Why on earth did I sign up for a lifetime of 2am birth-day parties and stat ED consults?!? While I could list the numerous reasons I love my specialty, one of my greatest satisfactions is patient care. As I grow into my practice, one thing has become clear - it is a true honor to be trusted by my patients. The mere privilege of becoming such an intimate component of their lives from teenage concerns to pregnancy issues, to menopause and problems into older age.
Pictured above is one of the many ways one of my patients have thanked me for their care. She had been suffering for some time but hadn’t found a doctor willing to address her concern, mostly because it posed the need for a difficult surgery. After careful planning and enough in-office visits for her to be comfortable, we proceeded with her surgery. In just 2 weeks, she was doing better than she had been doing in over a decade. At her final post-op visit she told me I had made her a new woman. Her thank you was homemade Bengali cuisine. It was so delicious #obviously and really the sweetest gesture. This patient encounter is one of many examples of why I am sitting here at 2am. Because in that moment of patient care, the good feelings were mutual and that must mean I am part of something grand. ❤️
What is your number one reason for why you love what you do??
