Can you guess what is happening here?
One of the most exciting things that one can experience in the bush!!! No, not monkeys, but alarm calls for a leopard!! That is what this guy is doing. When a troop of vervet monkeys are foraging, they will almost always have some (or one) of the troop higher up in the trees as a lookout. When danger is spotted, they release a loud 'bark' and this tells the rest of the troop that a leopard has been spotted. The agitation of the monkeys is something to behold! They gather together, the panic is tangible, and together they stare at the danger with horror and disgust, and pandemonium ensues as they bark together. This is probably the best way on earth to spot leopard.
I have just released a secret here.... You're welcome.
This was on the H4-1 just near the high level bridge between Skukuza and Lower Sabie, and I waited for some time until a young male leopard eventually appeared... thanks monkeys! He was young, and injured in his left eye, possibly from another leopard. He walked across the road, and disappeared into the thickets.
The monkeys carried on shouting until he was long gone.
That sound of monkeys always makes my heart race. 🐆🏃♂️❤️🎤🐒🙉.
